Shullsburg's Rennert Wins Girls 3-Point Challenge

Hattie Rennert, a senior from Shullsburg, won the 2017 girls 3-Point Challenge held Saturday morning at the Resch Center in conjunction with the State Girls Basketball Tournament.

Rennert, representing Division 5,  was one of 10 participants in the 3-Point Challenge, which was held for the third time. She scored 14 points in the final round to win the contest. Senior Tori Martell of Somerset was second with 13 points in the final round.

Rennert scored 19 points in the opening round and 18 in the semifinals. Martell opened with 18 points and followed with a competition-record 22 in the semifinals. Junior Justice Filip of Madison East and junior Brooklyn Paulson of Holmen also advanced to the semifinals with first-round totals of 19 and 18, respectively.  

Other participants were Natalie McNeal of Germantown, Brehna Evans of West De Pere, Savannah Walsdorf of Kiel, Arianna Mason of Stanley-Boyd, Caitlyn Tipton of Laconia and McKenzie Couey of Riverdale.

Appleton North, De Pere Square Off in Div. 1 Final

Appleton North 75, Milwaukee King 52

In the battle of the unbeatens, Appleton North (27-0) defeated Milwaukee King (25-1) 75-52 in the Division 1 State semifinal to advance to the final Saturday.

The Lightning led 32-31 after a tightly contested first half that featured eight lead changes and three ties. They opened the second half with a three-pointer by Kari Brekke that set the tone for the half. The Lady Generals fought back to get within three points of tying the game, but the Lightning answered with a 13-1 run midway through the second half to lead 66-49 with just under three minutes remaining. 

Much of Appleton North’s success in the second half was a result of hitting 60 percent of its field goals and limiting the Lady Generals to 23 percent shooting, including 1-of-11 from three-point distance. 

The Lighting boasted five players scoring in double figures. Sydney Levy had a game-high 19 points. Brekke added 14 points, and Callie Pohlman and Paige Schabo each had 12 points. Anna Laux chipped in with 10.

Sydnee Roby was strong in the interior for the Lady Generals. She led the team with 17 points, 12 rebounds and six blocks. Both Jada Patterson and Tishara Morehouse tossed in 11 points.

Appleton North advances to the championship for the first time in program history, and Milwaukee KIng exits in the semifinals of its fifth tournament experience.

De Pere (25-2) outlasted Middleton in overtime to advance to the Division 1 final following a 49-47 victory in the semifinals Friday night.

The Cardinals took a four-point advantage to start the overtime period, but the Redbirds outscored Middleton 8-6 in the extra period without the benefit of a field goal. They made 8-of-10 free throws to account for the margin of victory.

Both teams found points difficult to come by in the early portion of the game, as the score was knotted up at 2-2 through the first four minutes. The Cardinals hit a three-pointer to take lead the at 5-2, but the Redbirds used a 14-2 run to turn the tables and take a nine-point lead, their largest of the game.

Middleton (23-4) trailed 20-13 at halftime but clawed back to have the opportunity to win the game at the end of regulation, but two shots caromed off the rim in the game’s waning moments.

Annie Schneider led the Redbirds with 13 points and seven rebounds. Olivia DeCleene added 11 points. Bria Lemirande led the Cardinals with 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.

De Pere attempts to win its fourth State championship in their sixth appearance in the finals. Middleton’s season comes to an end with its 10th State appearance.


Beaver Dam, Cudahy Advance to Div. 2 Championship

Beaver Dam (27-0) remained undefeated by notching a 62-47 win over Monroe in the Division 2 semifinals Friday at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

The Golden Beavers scored the final seven points of first period to open a 34-24 halftime advantage. The Cheesemakers pulled within single digits at 39-32 with 15:13 showing on the clock, but Beaver Dam extended its advantage to 15 at 54-39 with just over five minutes remaining in the game.

The Golden Beavers took advantage of 12 Monroe turnovers, outscoring the Cheesemakers 15-0 on points following a turnover. Defensively, they shut down the Monroe perimeter attack, allowing the Cheesemakers to convert on just 1-of-13 tries from beyond the arc.

Cassidy Trotter led all scorers with 23 points for Beaver Dam. She also led the Golden Beavers with seven rebounds and four steals. Sydney Hilliard led three Cheesemakers scoring in double figures with 16 points. Jordan Hirsbrunner and Sydney Mathiason each chipped in with 10 points apiece.

Beaver Dam returns to the championship game for the first time since finishing runner-up in 1991. Monroe (21-4) ends its season with its ninth State appearance.

Cudahy (20-7) held off Hortonville to advance to the State final in Division 2 with a 46-36 triumph in the semifinals Friday afternoon.

The Packers took advantage of a 9-1 run in the final 6:46 of the first half to take a 24-18 lead into halftime. Cudahy maintained the lead throughout the entire second half. The Polar Bears cut the deficit to 28-26 at the 11-minute mark, but they could get no closer. The Packers built their biggest lead of the game at 46-34 with two minutes remaining in the game.

Cudahy shot 45 percent from the floor in the game while holding the Polar Bears to 26 percent. The possibility of a Hortonville comeback in the second half was derailed by a 0-of-8 shooting effort from three-point range and a series of missed opportunities from close range.

Bailey Eichner led all scorers with 13 points for the Packers. She also handed out a game-high six assists. Hannah Kulas added 12 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Shay Frederick scored 12 points and dished out four assists to lead Hortonville, and Morgan Allen contributed 10 points before fouling out.

Cudahy advances to the title game in its first State Tournament appearance, and Hortonville (20-6)

Edgewood, Martin Luther to Play in Div. 3 Title Game

Edgewood (24-3) will play in the championship game in Division 3 following a 60-38 victory over Wrightstown in the semifinals Thursday afternoon at the Resch Center.

Brita Hovde provided the first-half spark after the Crusaders fell behind 7-0 to start the game. She converted all five of her field goal attempts and scored 12 of her game-high 14 points in the first half.

The Tigers struggled finding the range, hitting on 23 percent of their shots in the first half to fall behind 27-16 at the break. Edgewood built its largest lead of the game at 60-36 with 2:47 to play in the game. The Crusaders took advantage of strong inside play, outscoring the Tigers 32-16 in the paint and possessing a 40-30 rebound advantage.

Hovde led four Crusaders in double figures. Estella Moschkau added 13 points, and Bri Foti and Katie Meriggioli chipped in with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Wrightstown’s balanced scoring attack was led by Kailee Van Zeeland with 12 points. Danielle Nennig added 11 points, and Alisha Murphy tossed in 10.

Edgewood plays for the Division 3 title after making its first tournament appearance last season, and Wrightstown (23-4) ends the season in the semifinals in its third State appearance.

Martin Luther (26-1) advances to the Division 3 final after downing Bloomer (22-5) 56-38 in the semifinals of the State Girls Basketball Tournament Thursday at the Resch Center.

Leading 28-21 at the half, the Spartans began a 9-1 scoring run early in the second half to build a 15-point advantage at the 10-minute mark. Martin Luther extended its lead to as many as 18 points late in the game to clinch the victory. 

Both teams shot 50 percent from the field in the first half. The Spartans continued their shooting efficiency in the second half, but the Blackhawks fell off the pace,  converting on just 32 percent of their shots.

Emma Kallas led three Spartans in double figures with 21 points. Emily Hafemann and Grace Amling each chipped in 10 points apiece. Chandler Zwiefelhofer led Bloomer with 15 points.

The Spartans advance to the Division 3 championship game in their first State Tournament appearance, and Bloomer is eliminated from title contention in its fourth appearance.

State Girls Basketball Tournament Preview

The 42nd Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Tournament will take place Thursday-Saturday, March 9-11, at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis. 

Ticket price for the tourney is $10 per session when purchased at the Resch Center. Tickets for the tournament will also be available for purchase online at the Ticket Star website: www.ticketstaronline.com.  All-session, as well as individual session tickets are available for purchase online for $12 per session.
