Board Approves Winter Sports Changes, Adjusts Rules & Policies in Wake of Pandemic

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control reviewed and acted on coaches committee recommendations impacting winter sports–including the addition of an individual State Tournament Series for girls wrestling in 2022–and other rule and budget considerations in response to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, at its June virtual meeting today.

2020-21 Basketball Rule Changes

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.  — Beginning next year, high school basketball rules will further clarify when a contest is to be forfeited, including if a qualified individual is not present to coach. A proposal for a national rule mandating a shot clock as well as a proposal to allow a shot clock by state adoption were not approved.

Important Rule Reminders Following School Closure Announcement

Here are a number of reminders for athletic directors and coaches as the DHS COVID-19 Executive Order has been extended through May 26, 2020. All WIAA rules remain in effect. These include code of conduct enforcement, in-season vs. out-of-season instruction and school year vs. summer contact opportunities – at this time.

Girls Basketball 3-Point Challenge Qualifiers Honored

Due to the cancelation of all remaining winter sports seasons, which included the 2020 WIAA Boys & Girls 3-Point Challenges, the WIAA Board of Control and executive staff is honoring all 10 girls contest finalists, as well as the 13 boys that were still in contention for a spot in the contest. 

WIAA Cancels All Remaining Winter State Tournament Series Events

STEVENS POINT, Wis. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association determined all remaining games of the State Girls Basketball Tournament, and the boys basketball sectional finals and the State Tournament will be canceled in response to the evolving concerns over the spread of COVID-19.

Kohl Center Not Available for State Boys Basketball Tournament; Board to Consider Next Steps

 STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic has been informed that the Kohl Center will not be available for State Boys Basketball Tournament scheduled for March 19-21.

WIAA Restricts Attendance at Basketball Tournament Series Events

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, in accordance with policies and guidance from public health organizations and the World Health Organization for mass gatherings, will be limiting attendance at the remainder of all winter tournament events scheduled March 12-14 and March 19-21.

WIAA Tournament Series Ticket Refund Information

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Tickets for the WIAA Girls and Boys State Basketball tournaments, except the party of 88 immediate family members, will be refunded in full. Please allow staff time to make these refunds and contact the WIAA office only if you do not see a refund to your account within two weeks of the tournament.

Any tickets purchased at school will we be refunded by your school and not the Resch Center or the WIAA.

WIAA Statement on Tournament Status

The WIAA State Girls Basketball Tournament and the boys basketball sectionals scheduled for this week are continuing as planned.

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The 45th Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Tournament will take place Thursday-Saturday, March 12-14, at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis.
