Sportsmanship Plus - Track & Field

Northwestern Dennis Simpson Invitational
April 30, 2021

At the 38th Annual Dennis Simpson Invitational Track and Field Meet, an example of good sportsmanship was displayed by Northwestern’s Bennett Nelson. After a heated race, Superior’s Jake Casper fell at the finish line. Bennett graciously offered his hand to pick Jake up and offered a congratulatory comment which I heard and witnessed. This Invitational was filled with good Sportsmanship. Job well done, Moose Lake, Ashland, Northwestern, Drummond, Unity, and South Shore/Washburn.

Pulaski @ Ashwaubenon
May 4, 2021

The communities of Pulaski and Ashwaubenon both have proud traditions in the sport of softball and Coach Vertz and Van Laanen continue to build positive experiences for their student athletes. The leadership was very evident in this contest with the players for both teams being very respectful to opponents and umpires during the entire game. Many positive comments were noted by both teams. I would like to acknowledge the catchers for both teams #11 Kubiak for Pulaski and #10 Olson for Ashwaubenon. Both are very talented players and were very respectful with my calls and always greeted me with a thank you after putting a new ball in play after a foul. The catches made this game flow nicely with thgeir work and leadership. Both communities should be proud of their softball student athletes.

Pulaski Tournament
May 1, 2021

I have worked for Pulaski Athletic Director Janel Batten for many years when she was a coach and she always treated me very fair and respectful. I umpired the Pulaski Tournament, and three days later Janel sent me a card thanking me for working the tournament. She made my day by reaching out and doing a little extra by sending a note. In a world where everything is moving at warp speed, it is wonderful to see people take a minute to write a note and show appreciation for your time and effort. Thank you Janel for being a great leader!

Amherst @ Shiocton
May 4, 2021

I would like to recognize the players and coaches from Shiocton and Amherst for their great sportsmanship. Coach Backman and Coach Held the positive manner in which you coached your players was noticed. I would also like to thank Ben Wilcox from Shiocton for his hustle and the positive words that he used to encourage his teammates. It was a privilege to be able to part of a great high school contest. Enjoy the remainder of the season.

Roncalli @ Brillion
April 29, 2021

With rain pelting down hard just prior to game time, we weren’t sure if we would be able to begin the contest. However, the rain didn’t dampen the spirits of either Roncalli or Brillion varsity baseball programs. We wanted to express our appreciation to both teams for a well-played game and to game management, for having the field safely ready at game time. Reece Stangel of Roncalli and Karter Trace of Brillion were the clear “example setters” for their teams during this contest. Each of them showed lots of hustle, excellent sportsmanship while interacting with opponents, coaches and umpires, and spent a little extra time helping me after numerous plays by retrieving bats and foul balls. Both the communities of Manitowoc and Brillion should be proud to have student athletes who act in this manner. We as umpires appreciate the positive atmosphere these young men create on the field. Thank you to all involved and best of luck this season!

Sportsmanship Plus - Wrestling

Dodgeland Quadrangular
Jan. 14, 2021

This event was amazing. With the troubling times, the teams came together to make this very enjoyable experience for the wrestlers. It started days ahead with the Dodgeland AD reaching out to everyone with expectations and a plethora of information to make sure everyone was safe. The coaches did the best they could to get match-ups for their wrestlers, with minimal concern for team scores It was all about the kids. Kudos to the coaches for that! And lastly, almost every wrestler that competed came up to thank the officials for working the quad. This morning, not to my surprise, we all received an email from the Dodgeland AD for a job well done. Class act all the way around, and all four programs need to be recognized for their sportsmanship and doing the best they could for the wrestlers.

D.C. Everest @ Hortonvile
Oct. 2, 2020

Games like the one we were so fortunate to work on Oct. 2 are exactly the blueprint for why we all feel high school athletics are so very important. The teams were very competitive, and the spirit level and play level was very high. More importantly, the sportsmanship level was even higher. Both schools/communities need to be extremely proud of their teams. The young men involved should be commended on how the contest was played. In these tough times, this is crystal clear reminder of why officials are willing to put time and effort in. Coaches...fans...total positive experience. Please accept my crew’s’ congratulations on your efforts. Thanks and please stay safe.
