Sportsmanship PLUS - Baseball

Marinette @ Fox Valley Lutheran
April 19, 2022

It is wonderful to see student athletes exhibit positive acts of sportsmanship before, during, and after a varsity baseball doubleheader. Fox Valley Lutheran’s Lincoln Thede & Eli Retzlaff, as well as Marinette’s Landon Cerwin, exemplify what it means to be great sportsman and leaders of a team. Gary and I wanted to congratulate these three young men for this much appreciated display of showmanship and positive attitude. Thank you to Coach Kramer and Coach Maedke for your positive leadership on and off the field, it was noticed by many.

Oak Creek @ Racine Horlick
April 5, 2022

Sportsmanship and Safety, go hand in hand. What your about to read, proves it, in a big way. On a bitter cold and windy afternoon Racine Horlick’s Tanner Isaacson hits a ground ball deep in hole between first and second. The Oak Creek second baseman cuts the ball off, headed for right field, and from his knees, throws to the first baseman Ryan Santi. The throw is somewhat up the first base line, and Santi stretches far up the line and keeps his foot on the base. He makes a great catch of the thrown ball in time to get Isaacson out. As this is happening, Isaacson has a full head of steam running to and beyond first base. To avoid a serious collision, Isaacson puts both his hands on Santi's back, but did not maliciously contact him. In fact, Isaacson side steps into foul territory, sort of, and that move avoided the possibility of potentially serious injury to himself and Ryan. The net result of the collision, was Santi being moved further down the first base line and Isaacson holding onto Santi to avoid further impact. The Horlick first base Coach, Drew Tague, along with Isaacson, immediately helped Santi to his feet. Everyone involved was apologetic and instantaneously checking with each other for any injuryl. Both head coaches, Scott Holler of Oak Creek and Tyler Funk of Racine Horlick,  deserve thanks for teaching their players the proper way to handle this situation. This was textbook!

Sportsmanship PLUS - Girls Soccer

Somerset @ Baldwin-Woodville
April 5, 2022

Both the Baldwin-Woodville and Somerset girls’ varsity and JV soccer teams deserve a shoutout for awesome sportsmanship during their games on April 5. With both games played in a steady and chilly rain, the girls were upbeat and positive the entire time and it was evident they were still having fun, not complaining about the conditions, and playing for love of the game. It was truly inspiring to watch these girls compete. Bravo to both schools!

Omro @ Ripon
March 29, 2022

On a very cold and blustery opening day in Ripon, the WIAA baseball season was in full swing with many acts of positive Sportsmanship. Donny Sohm and Nate Piper led the Omro team by assisting opponents with bat retrieval and offering a kind hand of congratulations on a game well played. Max Belling and Brett Bock of Ripon also added multiple acts of sportsmanship by helping retrieve foul balls and to chase down rogue, blowing helmets. We as umpires noticed these and many other positive acts of sportsmanship throughout the contest and very much appreciated them, thank you to both teams. Keep up the awesome work and have a great 2022 season!

Alma/Pepin @ Augusta
Jan. 27, 2022

I worked the JV game for these two teams and was impressed by the good sportsmanship displayed by both teams. Players played the game with respect for the opposition and officials and coaches coached their players not the officials. Both teams had quality players making for a good JV game. Working the game was enjoyable, good players, good coaches, good fans!

Menominee Indian @ Iola-Scandinavia
Jan. 21, 2022

The players from the Menominee Indian displayed great sportsmanship throughout the entire game. The were a few plays where a foul was called and the players went to the floor and the Menominee players were there to help the Iola players get up. The Menominee Indian players were very polite when talking to the officials. Even after they lost the game, they came up to us and thanked us for officiating the game. This to me is great leadership by the coach and parents.

Our crew was treated exceptionally well from the administration, game management, coaching staff and table crew last night at Manitowoc Lincoln. Athletic Director Dave Steavpack had his staff go above and beyond for the officials and communicated with us very well. Thank you for the hospitality, we look forward to coming back! These little things go a long way, we appreciate it.

From our arrival at the site to when we left after the game concluded, the overall atmosphere was outstanding. The fans cheered on there teams, the coaches coached their teams and both players and coaches from each respective team were easy to work with and treated the officials with kindness and respect. Both teams also demonstrated excellent sportsmanship toward each other and contributed to making it an overall positive experience.

We enjoyed a tremendous game, beginning with our communication with AD Clayton Kreger prior, then our welcome by his game management and Big 8 Commissioner Chris Nicholson, who came to check in with us prior to the game, our night was great. The game was outstanding, very close to the end! Players played, coaches coached, and we officiated. Players were very competitive but 'friendly' to each other throughout. Coaches were 'perfect.' They worked with us and asked questions as needed. This was one of my favorite officiating games in years! As a fellow teacher and coach. it was exactly the way high school sports should be and usually are here in Wisconsin.
