State Champions Crowned in Girls Golf

The 47th WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament produced team and individual champions in two divisions at University Ridge in Madison Tuesday.

Arrowhead successfully defending its title from a year ago to win the Division 1 team championship with a four-player, 36-hole score of 630. The Warhawks’ win their fourth State title overall in 18 State Tournament appearances. Milton finished second with a score of 657, and Brookfield Central placed third at 664. 

After tying for fourth place last season, Mia Seeman of Milton led throughout the tournament, earning individual medalist honors with a 1-over-par 145 for 36 holes. Abby Cavaiani of Kettle Moraine placed second at +3 with a score of 147 after a sixth-place finished a year ago. Defending champion Emily Lauterbach of Arrowhead placed third with a 148. 

Aquinas wins its first girls golf team championship in its first tournament appearance as a team, capturing the Division 2 crown with a score of 717. Edgewood finished 15 strokes back of the leader with a 732. Fox Valley Lutheran placed third with a score of 741.

Individually in Division 2, Erica Priebe of Fox Valley Lutheran emerged from the four leaders tied at the start of the second day to earn medalist honors at +16 with a score of 160. She tied for ninth last season. Emily Neff of Hayward finished second at 162 after placing seventh last year. and in the first day produced a four-way tie for first. Sydney Brandt of Catholic Memorial placed third with a 164 after placing 18th in Division 1 in 2016.

Girls State Golf Day 1 Recap

The first day of the 47th WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament set up a highly competitive scenario for the team and individual titles at University Ridge in Madison Monday.

Defending champion Arrowhead leads the Division 1 field by 13 strokes with a four-player, 18-hole score of 312 on Day 1. Milton is second with a score of 325, and Brookfield Central is currently third at 326.

Mia Seeman of Milton led throughout the first day and closed with a one-stroke lead. She shot a 1-under-par 71. Abby Cavaiani of Kettle Moraine and defending champion Emily Lauterbach of Arrowhead are one stroke behind with an even par 70. 

Aquinas possesses a one-stroke lead in the Division 2 team standings by shooting a 359 on Day 1. Edgewood led throughout much of the round and is currently second with a score of 360. Fox Valley Lutheran is third, 15 strokes behind the leader at 374, and Catholic Memorial is fourth with a 375.

Individually, the first day produced a four-way tie for first. Sydney Brandt of Catholic Memorial, Kate Munro of The Prairie School, Erica Priebe of Fox Valley Lutheran and Grace Welch of Edgewood all shot an 8-over-par 80.

Day 2 of competition begins with Division 1 at 8 a.m. with Division 2 beginning at 8:50 a.m. at University Ridge Tuesday.


State Girls Golf Championships Preview

The 46th Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls State Golf Championships will be held Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 9-10, at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis. Competition will begin at 8 a.m. on both days.

Arrowhead, The Prairie School Win Girls Golf Team Titles

The 46th WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament concluded with the crowning of two team champions and two individual medalists at University Ridge in Madison Tuesday.

Last year’s runner-up Arrowhead won the Division 1 team championship with a four-player score of 624 for the 36-hole tournament. Middleton finished second with a score of 675, and Onalaska placed third with a score of 335.

Sophomore Emily Lauterbach of Arrowhead won the Division 1 individual championship with a 2-under-par 142 after tying for 13th place last season. Senior Alexis Thomas of Middleton finished five strokes back with a score of 147 after placing fourth last year. Defending champion, senior Ashley Kulka of Beaver Dam, was third at 150.

The Prairie School decisively defended the team title in Division 2 with a score of 687, which was 50 strokes better than its next closest competitor Spooner at 737. Hayward finished third with a score of 741.  

Senior Sarah Busey of Racine St. Catherine’s won the Division 2 individual title with a 7-over par 151 after finishing third two years ago, Senior Lori Meyer of Freedom, who placed tied for sixth last season, finished second with a score 155. Grace Welch of Edgewood was third with a score of 164.
