Boys and Girls Teams Advance to State Volleyball Finals

Green Bay, Wis.  – The match-ups for four girls divisions and the single boys division have been determine following semifinal action of the 2019 State Volleyball Tournament at the Resch Center Friday.

Top-seeded Kimberly (34-2) cruised past Brookfield East (23-11) 25-17, 25-15, 25-17 in the boys semifinals to return to the championship match for the second straight season. The Papermakers controlled the game on the front line. They held a significant 42-25 advantage in kills with an impressive .330 attack percentage. The Spartans hitting attack was held in check by the Kimberly defense, which forced 23 errors for a .023 attack percentage in the match.

Defending champion Germantown (28-5) will play Kimberly in the championship match for the second year in a row after downing Marquette (21-7) 25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21 in the semifinals. The Warhawks’ service attack received much of the credit for the victory. They recorded seven aces and kept the Marquette attack out of rhythm. Both teams struggled in hitting efficiency. Germantown was victorious despite hitting at a .062 clip. The Hilltoppers were only slightly better at .071.

Top-seeded Arrowhead (41-3) upended two-time defending champion Burlington (39-5) in three sets 25-19, 25-14, 25-16 in the girls Division 1 semifinals. Arrowhead hit for a .256 attack percentage in the match led by Aubrey Hamilton’s 16-kill performance without an error. The Warhawks kept the Demons’ offense from gaining momentum with effective serving, recording nine aces and limiting them to a .023 attack percentage.

Second-seeded Oconomowoc (39-3) will clash with Arrowhead, attempting to improve on last season’s runner-up finish after a 26-24, 25-23, 25-16 sweep of River Falls in its semifinal. The Raccoons recorded a .290 kill percentage and notched 11 serve aces in the game.  The Wildcats posted a .256 attack percentage in the match.

Girls Division 1 Semifinals
Oconomowoc (39-3) def. River Falls (38-7) - 26-24, 25-23, 25-16 - Stats

McFarland (37-3), the #1 seed in the Division 2, rolled to a 25-18, 25-15, 25-14 victory over Bloomer (32-8) in its semifinal. The Spartans exerted its serving prowess with 11 aces, including five from Katie Hildebrandt. They possessed a 34-21 advantage in kills and held the Blackhawks to a .020 hitting percentage.

Third-seeded Luxemburg-Casco (34-13) will face McFarland in the Division 2 title tilt Saturday following its 25-15, 25-22, 25-23 sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran (37-15) in the semifinals. The Spartans executed a balanced hitting attack for a .229 hitting percentage while their defense forced the Vikings into 24 attack errors and a .066 hitting percentage. 

Girls Division 2 Semifinals

Howards Grove (43-4) confirmed why it received the top seed in Division 3 with a 25-11, 25-15, 25-7 sweep of Fall Creek in the semifinals. The Tigers compiled a 40-12 advantage in kills and hit for a blistering .390 attack percentage in the match. In addition, they recorded 14 service aces, which is one shy of the three-set Division 3 State Tournament record. Defensively, they held the Crickets to a -.056 hitting percentage.

Third-seeded Aquinas (31-3) advanced to the final to play Howards Grove with a three-set sweep of second-seeded Waterloo (31-11) 25-13, 25-17, 25-18. Lexi Donarski fueled the Blugolds’ hitting attack with a match-high 21 kills. As a team, the Aquinas posted an efficient .326 hitting percentage in the match and forced the Pirates into 20 hitting errors and .109 hitting percentage.

Girls Division 3 Semifinals

Top-seeded Clear Lake (37-0) remained undefeated with a 25-21, 25-20, 25-8 sweep over Newman Catholic (22-18) in its Division 4 semifinal. The Warriors’ aggressive offensive attack and production in their serving were the catalyst to advancing to the final. They held a 37-23 advantage in kills and recorded 13 service aces in the match. 

Second seed and defending champion Catholic Central (29-10) advances to the final in pursuit of back-to-back crowns after defeating Hillsboro (25-8) 25-19, 25-13, 22-25, 25-14 in its semifinal match. The Hilltoppers had a distinct advantage on the offensive attack with 59 kills compared to 39 for the Tigers. A majority of those kills were delivered by Sammie Seib, who set a four-set Division 4 record with 34 kills to lead the Hilltoppers.
