Barneveld 58, Shullsburg 28

After making its first appearance at State last season, Barneveld (26-3) wins the programs first title with a 58-28 win over Shullsburg in the Division 5 title game of the 2017 State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Shullsburg cracked the scoreboard first, but the Golden Eagles quickly reponded with an 11-0 run to take an 11-2 advantage, a lead they would not relinquish.

Leading the 21-16 at the half, the Golden Eagles outscored the Miners 37-13 in the second half. Barneveld went on a 20-5 run at the start of the half and closed the game with a 10-0 run, holding the Miners scoreless in the final 3:30 of the game.

The Barneveld defense held the Miners to 25 percent shooting for the game and set the Division 5 for the fewest points allowed in a State Tournament game. The 30-point margin of victory also set a Division 5 record.

Mathew Myers led all scorers with 20 points for the Golden Eagles. Malcolm Reed tossed in 12 points, and Mike Zouski added 11. Noah Wand scored nine points to lead the Miners. 

Shullsburg finishes runner-up in its second State Tournament appearance.

Stevens Point 48, Madison Memorial 41

Arrowhead 63, Brookfield Central 62 (OT)

Two-time defending champion Stevens Point (23-4) will go for its third straight championship following a 48-41 win over Madison Memorial in the Division 1 semifinals of the State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Kohl Center.

The Panthers led throughout most of the first half and led by as many as seven which was the largest lead of the period by either team. The Spartans shot 59 percent for the half, including 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. However, the Panthers hit 3-of-5 three-point attempts and held a 5-0 edge from the charity stripe to take a 26-22 lead into intermission.

Stevens Point increased its lead to eight points early in the second half before the Spartans responded with a 9-0 to take their only lead of the half. A basket by Joey Hauser at the 7:20 mark broke a 35-35 tie and gave the Panthers a lead they would not relinquish. Stevens Point secured its lead down the stretch by converting on all six free throw attempts in the final 25 seconds. 

Drew Blair led all scorers with 17 points for the Panthers. Beau Rosenthal chipped in with 12 points, and Joey Hauser added 11 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

Chris Knight led the Spartans with 16 points and five rebounds. Billy Wilson also scored in double figures with 10 points. 

The Panthers attempt to win their sixth State championship in 19 appearances, and Madison Memorial closes its season with its 10 State experience.

Arrowhead (21-5) advances to the Division 1 championship game with a thrilling 63-62 overtime victory over Brookfield Central in the semifinals of the State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison Friday night.

The entire game was closely contested. Both teams held leads in the first half. The Lancers largest lead of the first period was by virtue of scoring the first six points of the game. The Warhawks had a 6-0 run of their own to take a five-point lead that matched their largest lead in the half before going into halftime with a 28-25 lead. Each team struggled finding the range from beyond the arc in the half, combining to shoot 2-of-21.

The Lancers heated up in the second half. They went on a 13-1 run midway through the period to open a double-digit lead. They led by as many as 12 with 5:27 remaining at 56-44. That’s when Arrowhead began its three-point barrage and a 12-0 run to end regulation. 

Mark Matejic hit the first three-pointer to get the Warhawks deficit to under double digits. Ben Seefeld cut the lead to six, and Matejic made his second three-pointer under a span of two minutes. Three free throws in the last 2:37 tied the game at 56-56 at the end of regulation. Tommy Durand rolled in a one-handed shot on a short drive with eight seconds to play in overtime to provide the margin of victory.

Trevell Cunningham led the Warhawks, falling one assist shy of a triple-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. Seefeld tossed in 16 points; Alec Hamilton added 13; and Matejic scored 11. Gage Malensek led all scorers with 18 points for the Lancers, and Andres Peralta-Werns added 17 with Cole Nau chipping in with 12 p

Barneveld 72, Columbus Catholic 52

Shullsburg 63, McDonell Central 48

Barneveld (25-2) will play for the State title for the first time in school history following its 72-52 victory  over Columbus Catholic in the Division 5 semifinal of the State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Kohl Center in Madison Friday afternoon.

The Golden Eagles and Dons changed leads five times and were tied four times in the first half. Barneveld possessed a 30-26 advantage at halftime. In the second half, Barneveld led 42-41 at 12:02 when the Golden Eagles went on a 20-2 run take control of the game. The Dons answered with seven unanswered points, but could not narrow their deficit any closer than 12 points the rest of the way.

Barneveld dominated on the inside, outscoring the Dons 38-12 in points scored inside the lane. The Golden Eagles also controlled the glass, outrebounding Columbus Catholic 44-22.

Matthew Myers led all scorers with 17 points for the Golden Eagles. Mike Zouski contributed 14 points, and Malcolm Reed added 12. The Dons were led by Tyler Fuerlinger with 16 points and six rebounds. Nick Malovrh and Hunter Schultz each contributed with 13 points apiece.

Barneveld advances to the title game for the first time in its two State appearance, and Columbus Catholic is eliminated from title contention in its second State experience.

Shullsburg (26-2) ousted defending champion McDonell Central 63-48 in the Division 5 semifinals of the State Boys Basketball Tournament at the Kohl Center Friday morning.

McDonell Central led throughout all but 31 seconds of the first half and led 30-24 at intermission. However, the Miners erased an eight-point deficit early in the second half with a 19-4 run, putting the Miners up 45-38 at the nine-minute mark of the second half. They increased their lead to double digits at 51-41 with 6:11 remaining. The closest the Macks could get the rest of the way was eight points.

The turnaround in the second half was evident in the shooting statistics. The Macks went cold from the field, hitting on only 29 percent of their shots in the second half. They made just 2-of-17 three-point tries in the game. The Miners scorched the nets at a 63 percent clip in the second period and 52 percent for the game. 

Hunter Matye led all scorers with 19 points for the Miners. He also led the team with seven rebounds and seven assists. Noah Wand scored 13 points, and Lance Lierman and Joseph Meyer chipped in with 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Grayson Knowlton was the only scorer in double figures for the Macks with 13 points. He also had a game-high 11 rebounds. 

The Miners will play for the title in their second State appearance. The only other experience at State resulted in a Division 4 championship in 1991. McDonell Central (24-4) ends its season at State in its third appearance.
