Girls Singles & Doubles Tennis Champions Crowned

The 2017 State Girls Individual Tennis Tournament produced singles and doubles champions in two divisions at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison Saturday.

Third-seeded Kiki Risgaard of Neenah won the Division 1 singles title with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over top-seeded Andie Weise of Homestead in the title match after winning the doubles championship last season. She also finished third in singles play in 2015. Risgaard improved her record this year to 28-2.

Seventh-seeded Jordan Schifano of Divine Savior Holy Angels placed third, and Autumn Bruno finished fourth. Schifano’s teammate, Logan White, was fifth with Kimmy Steinert of Oshkosh West placing sixth. 

The fifth-seeded duo of Amanda Newman and Hailey Munz of Monona Grove defeated the second- seeded tandem of Frankie La Londe and Alyssa Boyer of Homestead to win the Division 1 doubles championship. They improved their record this season to 33-0. The pair improved on their finish last season when they advanced to the quarterfinals before being eliminated from title contention. 

Laura Nicholas and Abby Bremel of Madison West, the sixth-seeded duo, finished third, and eighth-seeded Samantha Ramsey and Gabby Majinski of New Berlin Eisenhower was fourth. In the fifth-place match, third-seeded Annabelle Crowley and Emma Koppa of Nicolet defeated top-seeded Hanna and Amanda Dorsey of Neenah.

Second-seeded Veda Sane of University School captured the Division 2 singles crown with a 3-6, 6-0,  
6-3 triumph over top-seeded Olivia Czerwonka of Kenosha St. Joseph in championship match. She improved her record to 29-3 on the season after finishing third two years ago. 

Third-seeded Laura Larrain of Newman Catholic finished third, and fourth-seeded Giana Apostoli of Kenosha St. Joseph placed fourth. Larrain’s sister, Mia, placed fifth as the sixth seed, and fifth-seeded Riley Strauss of University School was sixth after finishing runner-up last year.

The top-seeded doubles team of Kaitlyn Klinka and Megan Setter of Kenosha St. Joseph remained undefeated at 33-0 following their victory over the sixth-seeded team of Grace Drake and Kinsey Kessel of Edgewood 6-1, 6-1 in the title match. They improved their record this season to 33-0 record after finishing runner-up last season.

Second-seeded Meredith Heckert and Izzy Klesmith of Big Foot/Williams Bay placed third, and unseeded Elise Curtin and Stephnaie Sowin of Xavier was fourth. Elly Udovich and Ava Hoffmann of Kohler, who were seeded eight, placed fifth, and third-seeded Mackinzie Lindow and Erin Rice of East Troy were sixth.


The 2017 State Girls Team Tennis Tournament will be played Friday-Saturday, Oct. 20-21 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis. The Division 1 quarterfinals will begin Friday at 5:30 p.m. Play will resume Saturday with semifinal matches in both divisions at 9 a.m.

State Champions Crowned in Girls Golf

The 47th WIAA State Girls Golf Tournament produced team and individual champions in two divisions at University Ridge in Madison Tuesday.

Arrowhead successfully defending its title from a year ago to win the Division 1 team championship with a four-player, 36-hole score of 630. The Warhawks’ win their fourth State title overall in 18 State Tournament appearances. Milton finished second with a score of 657, and Brookfield Central placed third at 664. 

After tying for fourth place last season, Mia Seeman of Milton led throughout the tournament, earning individual medalist honors with a 1-over-par 145 for 36 holes. Abby Cavaiani of Kettle Moraine placed second at +3 with a score of 147 after a sixth-place finished a year ago. Defending champion Emily Lauterbach of Arrowhead placed third with a 148. 

Aquinas wins its first girls golf team championship in its first tournament appearance as a team, capturing the Division 2 crown with a score of 717. Edgewood finished 15 strokes back of the leader with a 732. Fox Valley Lutheran placed third with a score of 741.

Individually in Division 2, Erica Priebe of Fox Valley Lutheran emerged from the four leaders tied at the start of the second day to earn medalist honors at +16 with a score of 160. She tied for ninth last season. Emily Neff of Hayward finished second at 162 after placing seventh last year. and in the first day produced a four-way tie for first. Sydney Brandt of Catholic Memorial placed third with a 164 after placing 18th in Division 1 in 2016.

Preferred Experience or Training
•  Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university, with emphasis in physical education and administration  or equivalent professional experience.
•  Minimum of three years experience in physical education and athletics or equivalent.
•  A conceptual knowledge of general office administration.
•  Demonstrated skills in program administration relating specifically to assigned sports.
•  Experience as an administrative leader and innovator in athletics; as an official; experience in interpretation of  rules and tournament planning; experience as an athletic coach for interscholastic athletics.
•  Strong and successful background in basketball, soccer, cross country and track & field and other WIAA  sponsored sports.

Requirements
•  Ability to work with individuals from the clerical level to top management.
•  Communicate effectively by speaking, listening and writing in a clear, thorough and timely manner using  appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques.
•  Mature, management-orientated outlook on athletics and administrative operations with ability to lead and  motivate others.
•  Ability and willingness to accept evening and weekend duties, both self-determined and assigned.
•  Ability to utilize available technology, including software applications, email, internet and social media
•  Interest in interscholastic athletics and flexibility to adjust to changing job demands.
