STEVENS POINT, Wis. – A special election will take place for a position on the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control and two vacancies on the Advisory Council.

The Board position is a one-year position to complete the term of Dave Steavpack in District 4. He is retiring from Manitowoc Lincoln at the conclusion of the 2021-22 school year.

Both seats on the Advisory Council will represent small schools. One is for two years to complete the term of Cory Hinkel of Luck, who was voted in to represent District 1 on the Board of Control beginning next school year. The second position is a full three-year term to begin during the 2022-23 school year.                                   

District administrators, assistant administrators, high school principals and assistant principals at these levels who are interested in being a candidate are encouraged to apply by stating their intention via a letter to Kassie Mortimer (kmortimer@wiaawi.org) at the WIAA office. Other requirements to be eligible to serve on either the Board of Control or Advisory Council include Department of Public Instruction licensure allowing placement in the eligible set, full-time or part-time employment in a qualifying position, and not having membership in the teachers' bargaining unit.

Interested individuals for the Advisory Council positions should identify which of the small school terms they are declaring their candidacy.

In an effort to engage voter participation and based on recent feedback gathered from schools, please provide a written response to the following question:  “Why do you desire to be a WIAA Board/Advisory Member and how will you serve the membership in this role?” (50 words maximum).

Electronic voting will be used for this special election. More information and instructions will be emailed on May 17th.

The timeline of the special election process is as follows:

May 6, 2022         Announce that declarations of candidacy will be accepted.
May 13, 2022       Deadline for filing declarations of intent to run.
May 17, 2022       If more than twice as many candidates file, a primary election will be held.
May 20, 2022       Deadline for completing primary election ballot.
May 23, 2022       General election ballots will start.
May 27, 2022       Deadline for completing general election ballots.
Aug. 12, 2022      Successful candidate will be seated for the Board of Control meeting.
Oct. 5, 2022         Successful candidates will be seated for the Advisory Council meeting.

Interested and eligible candidates should email a letter declaring their candidacy to the attention of Kassie Mortimer at the WIAA office kmortimer@wiaawi.org by May 13, 2022.

The WIAA, as defined by its Constitution, is a voluntary, unincorporated, and nonprofit organization. The membership oversees interscholastic athletic programs for 516 senior high schools and 45 junior high/middle level schools in its membership.

I am excited at the opportunity to continue to serve the WIAA in the capacity of a WIAA Board of Control Member.  I have enjoyed the past six years in my role on the WIAA Advisory Board and would like to continue to serve the student-athletes and schools of Wisconsin.

Kyle Luedtke, District Administrator – Sevastopol

 I have served on the WIAA Advisory Council. In seeking a position on the Board of Control, I will have the same mission. That mission is to make decisions that based on what is fair and best for the entire organization even if unpopular.

As a former athletic director, I know the importance the WIAA and its committees play for the students in Wisconsin schools.  Just as volunteering to be part of the Competitive Balance Committee, I look to join the Advisory Council to be part of this vital role in our students’ lives.
