Rule Changes: Pole Vault Planting Box Padding Required in 2015

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — The installation of pole vault planting box padding permitted under Rule 7-5-24 will be a requirement in high school track and field beginning with the 2014-15 season.

This was one of 13 rules changes approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Track and Field Rules Committee at its June 10-12 meeting in Indianapolis. All rules changes were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Eight champions were crowned at the State Track and Field Championships in La Crosse, Wis., Saturday, including four-time defending Division 3 girls champion Edgar and three-time defending boys Division 1 champion Brookfield East. 

State Track & Field Meet Preview

The 118th Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Track and Field Championships and the 43rd Girls Track and Field Championships will be held Friday and Saturday, May 31-June 1, at the Veterans Memorial Stadium Complex on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. 

Ticket prices for the meet are $8 for each session or $12 for both sessions Friday if purchased at the stadium. A $1 convenience fee is added for tickets purchased online. Spring Sports Schedules Receive Reprieve

The WIAA Board of Control has approved "temporary scheduling relief" for spring sports schedules to address the significant scheduling challenges presented by the extreme inclement weather this spring.

Pole Vault Box Padding Now Permitted

The WIAA has announced, in response to the recent NFHS decision regarding new pole vault box padding, to alsoallow, not require, ASTM approved padding in the pole vault box. 

Please be aware of the following:

*Only padding that meets the current ASTM standard will be allowed. Some schools may have a prototype of this  padding.  Be aware that the prototype does not meet the ASTM standard. Homemade padding is NOT allowed.
