Waukesha South/Mukwonago Wins Div. 1 Swim Title

Waukesha South/Mukwonago won its third consecutive Division 1 State Girls Swimming and Diving team championship Saturday at the UW Natatorium in Madison, Wis.

The Waukesha South/Mukwonago co-op compiled 337 points to narrowly edge Arrowhead, which finishes runner-up for the third consecutive season, scored 333 points. Middleton placed third with 176 points.

Sophomore Beata Nelson of Verona swam to three titles and set two meet records. She won 100-yard butterfly for the second straight season with a time of 52.06, which breaks the record she set in the event last season. She also established a new record in the 100 backstoke, winning that event in a record time of 53.19. In addition, Nelson was the anchor leg on Verona’s winning 200 freestyle relay team .

Sophomore Katie Drabot of Cedarburg won both the 200 freestyle and 200 individual medley with times of 1:46.08 and 1:59.89, which sets the Division 1 State record in each of those events.  It was her second consecutive championship in the 200 I.M.

Several other returning champions successfully defended their titles. Junior Lindsay Adamski  of Arrowhead repeated as champion in the 100 breast stroke with a time of 1:01.95. Senior Abby Jagdfeld of Waukesha South/Mukwonago  won the 100 freestyle for the second straight season with a time of 49.86. Her teammate, Kaersten Meitz, returned to the medal stand to receive the gold for the second time in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:49.22. Both Jagdfeld and Meitz were instrumental in setting a meet record in the 400 freestyle relay as well. They teamed-up with junior Molly Manchon and sophomore Kierston Farley-Sepe to win the event with a time of 3:22.40. In addition, Senior Mary Warren of Arrowhead regained the title she won in the 50 freestyle in 2011, completing the race in a time of 23.29.

Junior Hazel Hertting was the top qualifier entering the meet in the diving competition, and she made that performance hold true, winning the event with a score of 463.10.

The Arrowhead captured the crown in the 200 medley relay for the fifth consecutive time, finishing with a time of 1:44.23.
