Ten Teams Play for State Softball Titles Saturday

MADISON, Wis. – Seven teams advancing to the championship games in divisions of the 2019 State Softball Tournament were determined by Friday’s semifinal action at Goodman Diamond.

Oshkosh North (30-0) remained undefeated with a 4-0 shutout over Kenosha Bradford/Reuther (24-7) in one of the Division 1 semifinals. Sydney Supple yielded just two hits with 13 strikeouts to earn the complete game victory. Back-to-back triples by Brooke Ellestad and Supple were the key hits in a three-run sixth inning.

In the other Division 1 semifinal, Pulaski scored a run in the third, but defending champion Sun Prairie scored three runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a lead they would not relinquish, winning 5-2. Maddie Gardner drove in a pair of runs and was credited with the complete-game victory, striking out 10 hitters and allowing six hits and one earned run.

In Division 2, Monroe (23-4) jumped on New Berlin West (22-4) early and often its semifinal match-up, scoring four runs in the first, two in the second to cruise to the victory. Sydney Updike collected three hits, and Olivia Bodak drove in three runs to lead the Cheesemakers’ 12-hit offensive attack. Bodak also was credited with the complete-game win, striking out 11 batters and surrendering just one earned run on five hits.

Seymour (25-1) also earned its chance at the Division 2 title following a 4-2 victory over Ellsworth (24-3). The Thunder scored three times on three hits in the pivotal third inning, and Paige Weyer got the win by allowing just on earned run, striking out nine and surrendering five hits. Dinah King belted a double and a triple in the game.

Defending Division 3 champion Poynette (29-0) rode the arm of Casey Fountain to post a 7-0 victory  over Prescott (20-11) to improve its record to 29-0. She struck out 14 batters and allowed just two hits.  Mara Millard and Brianna Kowald each collected three hits and drove in two runs to fuel the Pumas’ offense.

Campellsport (17-7) also received a sterling pitching performance in its 3-0 victory over Southern Door (21-7) in the other Division 3 semifinal. Alyssa Muench struck out 12 batters and allowed only three hits to earn the complete-game victory. Lauren Heisdorf was the only Cougar to collect multiple hits with two to go with an RBI.

In the Division 4 semifinal played Friday, defending champion Horicon (24-1) plated five runs in the sixth inning to erase a 3-2 deficit and go on to a 7-4 win over Thorp (19-7). Payton Marvin drove in two runs with a pair of hits in the game, and Lauren Miller contributed a double and two RBIs.

On Thursday, Mishicot (25-0) scored for times in first inning to go on to a 5-1 win over Pacellli (19-7) in the other Division 4 semifinal. In the Division 5 State semifinals Thursday, Belmont (25-1) blanked Tri-County (19-4) 15-0, and Blair-Taylor (28-0) remained undefeated with an 8-3 victory over Gilman (21-5).

The championship games in all five divisions are scheduled for Saturday, beginning with the Division 5 title game at 8 a.m.
