Stoughton, Kaukauna Advance to Div. 1 Team Wrestling Final

The chase for the 2015 State Team Wrestling championship in Division 1 is down to two teams following the quarterfinals and the semifinals session at the UW Field House in Madison Friday.

Kaukauna advances to battle Stoughton for the title. The Galloping Ghosts down Burlington 49-19 in its quarterfinal match. Trailing 16-4 through four weight classes starting at 182 pounds, Kaukauna recorded four straight pins at 106, 113, 120 and 126 to erase the deficit and take a 28-16 advantage. That went on to win four of the final five bouts in the match.

The same script was repeated in the Galloping Ghosts’ 41-26 win over Hudson in the semifinal. Trailing 13-6 through the first four weights starting at 195, they recorded three pins and a pair of major decisions in the next five weight classes to take control of the match.

Stoughton advanced with a 36-33 triumph over Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln in the semifinals. With the match tied at 15-15, the Vikings scored the next 21 points to open a 36-15 lead. The Red Raiders fell short in their attempt at a comeback despite winning the final four bouts of the match.

Stoughton won its quarterfinal by dominating the lower and middle weight classes in its 36-30 victory over Sauk Prairie. The Vikings notched 30 points with the 106 through 145-pound weight classes to clinch the match despite three pins by Sauk Prairie to end the match.

In other quarterfinal action, Wisconsin Rapids downed Pewaukee 41-24, and Hudson eliminated Cedarburg with a 40-31 tally.

Action resumes tomorrow at 10 a.m. with the Division 2 and 3 semifinals. Finals are scheduled in all three divisions at 3 p.m.
