State Team Wrestling Semifinals Set

Four teams advanced to the semifinals in Division 1 following quarterfinal action at the 22nd WIAA State Team Wrestling Tournament Friday at the UW Field House in Madison, Wis.

Bay Port (20-3) defeated Menomonee Falls 63-13 in its quarterfinal match. The Pirates jumped out to an 18-0 lead with three pins at the first three weight classes to take an early 18-0 advantage. The Pirates completed the match with four straight pins to post 10 pins in their 11 bout victories.

Wausau West (19-3) blanked Burlington 54-0 to advance to the semifinals. The Warriors won 13 of the 14 bouts in the match. They opened a 15-0 lead after the first four matches. The only victory for the Demons was a decision at 182; however, two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on the Burlington bench erased their score.  Wausau West capped the match with pins in three of the final five bouts.

Sauk Prairie (11-2) didn’t disappoint a large student and community contingent in a 43-19 win over Mukwonago in its quarterfinal match-up. The Eagles won the first six bouts of the match, including pins at 182 and 195 to take control of the match early with a 25-0 advantage and cruised to the victory.

Kaukauna (21-0) remained undefeated in dual match play following a 45-9 triumph over Badger. With a 12-9 lead through the first six matches, the Galloping Ghosts swept the remaining eight weight classes to secure the victory, including a pair of pins at 285 and 106, and a technical fall at 138.

Wrestling resumes Saturday with the Division 1 semifinals at 9 a.m. Sauk Prairie duals Kaukauna, and Bay Port takes on Wausau West.

The Divisions 2 and 3 semifinals follow at 1 p.m. In Divsion 2, perennial powers Ellsworth and Luxemburg-Casco will hook up in a rematch of last year's final, and Mauston will wrestle Chilton/Hilbert. In Division 3, three-time defending champion Coleman faces Clear Lake and Lancaster will dual Random Lake.

The State finals in all three divisions are scheduled for 6 p.m. Tickets are available at the gate.
