State Individual Tennis Tourney Preview

THE MEET:  The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys State Individual Tennis Championships will be held Thursday through Saturday, June 5-7 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, Wis. Action will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and resume at 9 a.m. Friday. Competition on Saturday begins at 8:30 a.m. Ticket prices are $6 per session.

9 a.m. Championship Semifinals

11:30 a.m. Championship matches

ON THE AIR:  A 30-minute highlight program of the 2014 Boys State Individual Tennis Tournament will air on FS Wisconsin on July 19 at 9:30 p.m.

LAST YEAR:  Top-seeded Felix Corwin of Brookfield East captured the  Division 1 singles title by defeating two-time defending champion Damon Niquet of Marquette 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-1 in the championship match. In Division 1 doubles play, the top-seeded tandem of CJ Armbrust and Jed Sekaran of Marquette defeated second-seeded Greg Raster and Austin Budiono of Marquette in the championship match 6-1, 6-4. Zane Navratil of The Prairie School won his second consecutive Division 2 singles title by defeating top-seeded Tyler Lewis of Kohler in the championship match 6-1, 6-3. In Division 2 doubles play, Nick DelMoral and Mark Cullen of Notre Dame captured the title with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Matt and Mike Mirsberger of University School in the final. 

DIVISION 1 SINGLES OUTLOOK:  Senior Felix Corwin of Brookfield East returns to defend the title he won in 2013. He has been bestowed the top seed of the tournament with an undefeated record in 18 matches. Corwin also finished runner-up in 2012 and advanced to the quarterfinals in 2011. Freshman Jake Van Emburgh of Middleton is 21-1 in his first high school campaign, which earns him the second seed. The third seed is sophomore David Horneffer of Brookfield East. He has compiled an 18-1 record this season after winning a pair of matches at State as a freshman. Senior Nick Allen of Green Bay Southwest received the fourth seed. He enters tournament play with a 15-0 record after placing sixth at State last season and fourth in 2012. Senior Danny Coran of Homestead has posted a 13-2 record this spring to earn the #5 seed. He won a pair of matches at State the past two seasons before being eliminated from title contention. Sophomore Ryan Risgaard of Neenah qualifies for the second year in a row. He qualified as a freshman last year and lost to his first-round opponent who eventually placed fifth. He enters play with a 21-5 record. The seventh seed belongs to junior Calin Dumitrescu of Nicolet. He has compiled a 24-6 record this season after winning a pair of matches at State last year. He also qualified as a freshman in 2012, but fell in his opening round match. Sophomore Doug Francken of Brookfield East is seeded eighth with a 27-1 record. He won a pair of matches at State last season as a freshman before falling in the third round. Junior Kevin Ballecer of Nicolet also won two matches at State a year ago. He lost in the third round to Damon Niquet, a two-time State champion who finished runner-up last season. He returns with the #9 seed with a 25-3 record.  

DIVISION 1 DOUBLES OUTLOOK: The Homestead senior tandem of  Will Kammerait and Aaron Rempel have received the top seed in the bracket. They enter play with a mark of 12-2. The second seed is the brother duo of Austin Budiono, a senior, and freshman Ethan Budiono of Marquette, who have compiled a 16-1 record to this point of the season. Austin made up half the combination that finished runner-up last season. Senior Ben Wait and junior Eric Stodola of Germantown received the third seed with a 25-2 tally this season. Stodola qualified last season with another partner and won one match before falling to Peter Rentzepis and Matt Lindsay of Eau Claire Memorial in the second round. Rentzepis and Lindsay, both seniors, won a pair of matches at State last season and are the #5 seeded duo this year with a 23-4 mark. The fourth seeded combination is sophomore Patrick Krill and junior Henry Termuehlen of Brookfield East. The tandem followed-up its sixth-place finish last season with a 14-4 record his spring. Senior Jason Jesse and junior Chase Gabriel of Homestead is seeded sixth with a 17-1 record. Jesse qualified for State and won a match last season with a different partner. Juniors Jimmy Engelhart and Tim Langlois is another seeded tandem from Brookfield East in this year’s field at #7. They have compiled a 13-1 record this year after Engelhart advanced to the third round last season with Ben Stewart, who has teamed up with fellow senior teammate Nate Allenstein to comprise the 15th seed with an 11-0 record.  The eighth seed is seniors Joey Nieson and Evan Stone of Middleton. They enter play with a 22-3 mark. 

DIVISION 2 SINGLES OUTLOOK: Two-time defending champion Zane Navratil, a senior from The Prairie School, is seeking to become the first Division 2 player to win three consecutive individual championships. Mark Loughrin of Greendale won three titles, but were not consecutive and two were in the one-division format. He is top seed with a spotless 27-0 record. Freshman Kai Sane of  University School was selected as the #2 seed with his 19-6 record. He is the highest of three freshmen seeded in the top six. The third seed went to junior Jack Dykema of West De Pere, who has qualified for State in Division 1 the last two seasons.  He has accumulated a 30-2 record this season, which is the highest win total of anyone in the bracket. Freshman Juan Perez of The Prairie School has made quite an impression in his first season with a 27-0 record. He was given the #4 seed. Senior Brett Giesen of Roncalli is the fifth seed for the second straight season and has qualified for State for the third time. He placed sixth a year ago. Freshman Cecil Lingard of Edgewood is seeded sixth with his 21-4 record heading into State Tournament play. Senior Brent Mackman of University School is the seventh seed with an 18-5 mark. Last season, he was half the duo that finished fourth in the doubles competition. Senior Sebastian Lauterbach of Big Foot/Williams Bay possesses the #8 seed with a 20-1 record.

DIVISION 2 DOUBLES OUTLOOK:  Senior Mike Mirsberger of Catholic Memorial teams up with sophomore Tommy Matoska to form the top-seeded doubles pair with a 19-0 mark. Mirsberger was half of the pair that finished runner-up a year ago and third in 2012. Seniors Nate Calawerts and Nick Williams of Notre Dame return to State for the third time as a duo. They are the second seed, possessing a 25-2 record. They gained State experience by winning their first-round match in 2012 and placing sixth a year ago. Last year’s third-place finishers were assigned the third seed. Senior Danny Uhen and Frank Wong of Dominican have compiled a 16-2 record this season. Senior Joey Harris of University School placed fifth last season with a different partner. This season, he and sophomore Jack Collison have joined forces to notch a 15-8 record and have received the #4 seed. Seniors Nick Klement and Connor Iaquinta of Martin Luther have qualified for the second straight season. The fifth-seeded duo sport a 16-6 record heading into play this week after advancing to the second round in the tournament last season. Senior Danny Trunzo and sophomore Adil Bhatia of Brookfield Academy are appearing in their second straight tournament after qualifying last season, but they did not advance out of the first round. The pair has a 12-9 record this season and are seeded sixth. Junior Charlie Kirsh and sophomore Connor Maloney of Edgewood are the seventh seed with a 12-7 mark, and the Plymouth duo of senior Ben Bachmann and Steven Blend were awarded the eighth seed with a 16-3 record. Blend advanced to the third round last season with a different partner.
