LAST YEAR:  Menomonee Falls won the Division 1 title with a 25-17, 25-18, 25-16 sweep of Westosha Central in the championship final. East Troy downed Edgewood in three sets 25-11, 25-14, 25-11 in the Division 2 championship match, and Regis captured the Division 3 crown by defeating Auburndale 25-22, 25-17, 18-25, 25-20 in the title match. Newman Catholic won the Division 4 title with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-20 sweep of Clayton in the championship match.

ABOUT THE DIVISION 1 FIELD:  Muskego is the lone qualifier in Division 1 that played in the tournament last season.  The Warriors are actually making their seventh straight appearance and their 10th in the last 11 years. This is the Warriors’ 14th appearance overall, which includes State championships in 2005 and 2009,  and runner-up finishes in 2006 and 2010. They defeated Greendale in the Greenfield Sectional final to earn another berth in the State quarterfinals. The Warriors finished second to Division 2 qualifier Catholic Memorial in the Classic Eight Conference this fall. Kimberly will appear in its 10th State Tournament overall and its first since 2004. The Papermakers won the Division 2 championship in 1990 and finished runner-up in 1995 and 1999. They downed Appleton East in five sets in the sectional final held at East to return to State for the first time in a decade. They are the champions of the Fox Valley Association this season. Merrill will make its seventh appearance at State with the last experience coming in 2012 when the Blue Jays advanced to the semifinals before being ousted from title contention. Their first five experiences came in the 1970s and early 1980s with the pool play format. The Blue Jays’ State berth comes virtue of their five-set win over Eau Claire Memorial in the Chippewa Falls Sectional final. They are the champions of the Wisconsin Valley Conference this year. Burlington qualifies for the State Tournament for the sixth time and for the first time since winning the second of two State titles in 2012. The Demons furthest advance in the tournament prior to the back-to-back championships was to the semifinals in 1997 and 2009. Their return to the quarterfinals comes following a three-set win over Kenosha Tremper in the sectional final played at Burlington. They finished atop the Southern Lakes Conference standings this season. This will be the seventh appearance for Divine Savior Holy Angels. The Dashers finished runner-up in their most recent State experience in 2012. They won the State title in 2001. This season, they defeated Brookfield East in the sectional final played at East to gain their berth in the State quarterfinals after winning the Greater Metro Conference title. Germantown is making its fourth appearance at State. The three prior experiences came in 1990, 1992 and 2005. The Warhawks seek to get beyond the quarterfinals for the first time. They are the representatives out of the Waukesha West Sectional following their three-set sweep over Mukwonago in the final. The Warhawks are the champions of the North Shore Conference this season. Manitowoc Lincoln makes its third appearance at State and its first since 2008. The Ships’ only other experience came in 1998. They are looking to advance past the quarterfinal round for the first time. They defeated West Bend East in the sectional final played at Oshkosh West to reach the State quarterfinals. The Ships were the champions of the Fox River Classic Conference this season. DeForest has qualified for the State Tournament for the first time following the Norskie’s five-set victory over Sun Prairie in the final that was played at Sun Prairie. They are the champions of the North Division of the Badger Conference this season.

ABOUT THE DIVISION 2 FIELD:  Waupun returns to State for the first time since 2010. The Warriors are making their 16th appearance in the State Tournament. They have won a membership-leading 11 championships (1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and 2008). They have also finished runner-up twice, in 1994 and in 2007. The Warriors defeated Luxemburg-Casco in the Waupaca Sectional final to advance to the State semifinals, and they won the Eastern Wisconsin Conference championship this fall. Catholic Memorial makes its seventh State  appearance and its first since winning the third of three consecutive titles in 2011. The Crusaders also won the championship in 2006 and finished runner-up in 2008. They defeated Kettle Moraine Lutheran in the East Troy Sectional in three sets to earn the chance for a fifth State title. They are the champions of the Classic Eight Conference this season. Platteville last experienced the State Tournament during the pool-play-format era in 1994 when the Hillmen won the State title. They also won Class B championships in 1977 and 1979, and finished runner-up in 1978. The Hillmen’s fifth overall appearance and their first in two decades comes following their victory over Lakeside Lutheran in the Whitewater Sectional final match. They are the co-champions of the Southwest Wisconsin Conference. Tomahawk is making its fourth appearance in the State Tournament and its first since 2012. The Hatchets are in pursuit of their first State title. They placed runner-up in  2011. Their berth in the semifinals comes following a four-set win over Barron in the New Richmond Sectional final. The Hatchets are the champions in the Great Northern Conference this year.

ABOUT THE DIVISION 3 FIELD:  Cameron is back in the tournament for the first time since 1983 and for the third time overall. The Comets’ previous two experiences came in Class C during the pool-play era. They swept Aquinas in three sets to get back to the State Tournament for the first time in 31 years. They tied Division 4 qualifier Clayton for the title of the Central Lakeland Conference this year. Marathon will be making its second tournament appearance and its first since 2007 when the Red Raiders fell in the semifinals. They earn the trip to Green Bay this year by defeating Lourdes Academy in the sectional final played in Marathon. The Red Raiders finished the regular season as runners-up in the South Division of the Marawood Conference. Howards Grove is also experiencing the State Tournament for the second time. The last time the Tigers qualified was during the pool-play era in 1976. This year, they tied for the Central Lakeshore Conference crown and advance to the semifinals with a victory over Lake Country Lutheran in the Sheboygan South Sectional final. Waterloo has qualified for the State Tournament for the first time following the Pirates’ three-set sweep of Wisconsin Heights in the Brodhead Sectional final. They are the champions in the South Division of the Capitol Conference.

ABOUT THE DIVISION 4 FIELD: Defending champion Newman Catholic is making its seventh overall appearance and its sixth in the last seven seasons. The Fighting Cardinals’ have two runner-up finishes, one in 2009 and another in 2012. They are the representatives out of the Marathon Sectional, defeating Niagara in three sets in the final. They finished first in the South Division of the Marawood Conference this fall. Last year’s runner-up Clayton will make its second straight appearance and its sixth overall. The Bears also finished runner-up in 2008. Prior to that they won two State titles, those coming in 1990 and 1996. They return to the Resch Center this season with a three-set sweep over Washburn in the Rice Lake Sectional final. They tied Division 3 qualifier Cameron for the title of the Central Lakeland Conference this season. Hilbert also returns to the tournament after qualifying last year. It will be the Wolves’ fourth appearance overall, and they are attempting to reach the title game for the first time. They defeated Catholic Central in the sectional final played at Hilbert to book their return trip to the Resch Center. The Wolves tied for the Olympian Conference title this year. Southwestern is back at the Resch Center for the second time in the last four seasons. In the Wildcats’ only other appearance in the State Tournament, they fell in the 2011 semifinals. After placing second in the Southwest Wisconsin Activities League standings, the Wildcats advanced through the Luther sectional and swept Royall in three sets in the final.
