BY THE NUMBERS:  There were 203 teams sponsoring girls tennis this fall with 133 in Division 1 and 70 in Division 2. The State Tournament field of teams is determined by team points recorded at the subsectional and sectional levels.

LAST YEAR: Neenah won its first girls tennis team title by capturing the Division 1 title with a 4-3 victory over Brookfield East in the championship match. The Rockets won one of the four singles matches and added victories at all three doubles flights to secure the victory. Edgewood won the Division 2 title to earn the school’s second girls tennis team title. The Crusaders  posted a 7-0 win over Altoona in the championship match.

THE HISTORY OF THE CHAMPIONSHIPS:  In Division 1, Nicolet has won six titles since the advent of the team championship dual format in 1994 and have won a membership-leading 17 titles. Brookfield Central has won nine team championships and three since the beginning of the dual format. Whitefish Bay has won eight titles–including four Division 2 titles–and University School has seven championships.

ABOUT THE DIVISION 1 FIELD:  Defending champion Neenah is making its 14th overall appearance at State and its fifth in a row. The Rockets’ best outcome in the State Team Tournament have come with their four runner-up finishes, which came in 1983 and 1986–prior to the team tournament format–and in 2000 and 2014. Last year’s runner-up Brookfield East returns to State for the third straight season and for the fifth time overall. Before last season’s second-place finish, the most notable of the Spartans’ appearances was advancing to the semifinals in 1994. Eau Claire Memorial is making its seventh straight appearance at State and its 18th overall. In addition to a runner-up finish in 2013, the Old Abes have placed second four times (1998, 1999, 2001 and 2004). Nicolet is making its 13th appearance overall since the dual meet format was established and its seventh in the last eight seasons. The Knights have won six team championships, including three straight on two different occasions, from 1994-96 and from 1998-2000. Including the pre-team tournament era, they have been crowned team champions a membership-leading 17 times and have finished runner-up eight times. Madison West qualifies for the tournament for the 11th time and for the first time since the 2009 season. The Regents best outcome in the tournament was a runner-up finish in 1997. Homestead is making its 10th tournament appearance and its first since 2013. The Highlanders have won five team championships, all coming consecutively from 2008-12. They also recorded back-to-back runner-up finishes in 2002-03. Sun Prairie is making its second consecutive appearance in the team tournament, which also accounts for the Cardinals’ overall number of experiences. They fell in the quarterfinals a year ago. Pulaski is making its first-ever appearance in the State team tournament.

ABOUT THE DIVISION 2 FIELD:   Last year’s champion Edgewood makes its eighth straight appearance in the State Tournament field and its 10th overall. In addition to the title the Crusaders won last season, they also won the championship in 2013 and recorded runner-up finishes on four occasions–in 2004, 2010, 2012 and again in 2014. Regis is making its sixth appearance and its first since a string of five straight appearances ended in 2014. The Ramblers have yet to advance past the semifinal round. It’s the second appearance for Kohler in the State Team Tournament, making its inaugural appearance last season. The Blue Bombers fell to eventual champion Edgewood in the semifinals. It’s the first time Pacelli has advanced to the State Team Tournament.

LAST WEEK:  Top-seeded Emily Luetschwager of Stevens Point successfully defended her title to win her second consecutive Division 1 singles title with a 6-1, 6-0 win over second-seeded Isabelle Lee of Bay Port in the championship final. Second-seeded Christina Price and Kiki Risgaard of Neenah won the Division 1 doubles title with a 6-3, 6-0 win over fourth-seeded Elise Gerard and Annabelle Crowley of Nicolet. Claire Czerwonka of Kenosha St. Joseph won the Division 2 singles title for the third straight year. She defeated second-seeded Riley Strauss of University School by a score of 6-1, 6-1. The top-seeded tandem of Abby Fox and Maddie Molitor of Edgewood won the Division 2 doubles crown with a 6-2, 6-1 win over second-seeded Megan Setter and Kaitlyn Kalinka of Kenosha St. Joseph Catholic.
