State Cross Country Championships Recap

The 101st running of the boy's State Cross Country Championships and the 41st girls meet were completed under cool and damp conditions at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids Saturday. 

Stevens Point captured the Division1 boy’s team championship with a score of 83. It’s the Panthers first title since 2008 and their 10th championship overall, which ties for second-most in the membership. Madison West was runner-up with 124 points. Junior Olin Hacker of Madison West ran to the individual title with a time of 15:46.19 on the 5,000-meter course.

Wisconsin Lutheran won the Division 2 boys cross country championship for the second time in three seasons with a five-runner score of 63 after placing third last year. Monroe was second in the team standings with 95 points. Senior Ethan Moehn of Monroe won the individual title with a time of 15:58.93.

Darlington won the boy’s Division 3 team championship for the third season in a row and its fifth time overall by scoring 87 points, narrowly ahead of runner-up Chequamegon with 89 points. Senior Tyson Miehe of Darlington won his third straight individual championship, crossing the finish line first with a time of 15:57.5. He becomes just the fifth boy to win three crowns.

Arrowhead won its third straight Division 1 girls team title to become the 10th program to accomplish the feat. The Warhawks scored 84 points with their top-five runners on the 4,000-meter course. Whitefish Bay and Neenah finished with a score of 122, but Whitefish Bay places second based on the tie-breaker. Senior Elizabeth Flatley of Brookfield Central ran to honors in the individual race, finishing with a time of 4:11.11. She placed seventh the past two seasons.

Edgewood won the girls Division 2 championship with a score of 84 points, 12 fewer than runner-up Notre Dame. Sophomore Morgan Florsheim of Shorewood with a time of 14:29.10 after finishing fifth last season.

Lourdes Academy won its third girl’s State cross country championship in the last four years, running to a score of 45. Cedar Grove-Belgium finished second with a team total of 83.  Senior Delaney Sinnen of Random Lake ran to the individual title with a time of 14:22.6 after placing third last season and fourth in 2011.
