THE MEET: The 95th Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys State Individual Tennis Championships will be held Thursday through Saturday, June 1-3 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, Wis. Action will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and resume at 9 a.m. Friday. Competition on Saturday begins at 8:30 a.m. Ticket prices are $6 per session.

LAST YEAR: Top-seeded David Horneffer of Brookfield East won the Division 1 singles title by defeating second-seed and teammate Robert Krill in the final 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. In Division 1 doubles play, the top-seeded tandem of Patrick Krill and Doug Francken of Brookfield East downed the second-seeded duo of Alan Desai and Grant Mauthe of Neenah in the championship match 6-0, 6-0. Fourth-seeded Casey Johnson of Kohler won the Division 2 singles title by defeating second-seeded Juan Perez of The Prairie School 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. In Division 2 doubles play, third-seeded Charlie Parish and Isaac Hingtgen of Notre Dame captured the title with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over the top-seeded team of Zach Schneck and Jake Coran of University School in the final.
DIVISION 1 SINGLES OUTLOOK: Senior Robert Krill of Brookfield East qualifies for the tournament as the #1 seed. He will be participating is the State Tournament singles bracket for the third straight season. He finished runner-up last season after placing fourth in 2015 and fifth in 2014. He possesses a 22-0 record entering play this week. Junior Colt Tegtmeier of Madison Memorial received the #2 seed with a 27-2 record. He finished fifth a year ago. Tegtmeier also qualified in 2015 and won two matches before being eliminated from title contention. Sophomore Will Tennison earned the #3 seed with a 25-3 mark this season. He qualified as a freshman last season and proceeded to finish sixth. Sophomore Jaden Aranda of Nicolet was provided the fourth seed on the virtues of his 27-2 record this season. He qualified as a freshman last season and won a match before falling out of title contention. Junior Neel Raut of Oshkosh West qualifies for the third straight season and was given the fifth seed with a 25-3 record. He qualified as a freshman in 2015 and won two matches last year before bowing out of title contention. Senior Alex Alt of Kimberly was granted the sixth seed with his 21-2 record this season. He qualifies for the fourth time in an attempt to move beyond the first round for the first time since advancing to the second round as a freshman in 2014. Senior Daniel Moore of Kenosha Tremper, the seventh seed, also qualifies for the fourth time in his career. He has won a pair of matches the past two seasons after advancing to the second round as a freshman in 2014. He enters play this week possessing a 30-2 record for the season. Senior Jackson Atassi of Neenah is another four-time singles qualifier. He is seeded eighth this season with a 19-6 mark. He won his opening match at State in each of his first two campaigns and won a pair of matches last season before falling out of title contention. Krill and junior Evan Kubiak of Neenah are the only two remaining players that have not suffered defeated this season. Kubiak enters play this week with a 22-0 mark. There are three others in the bracket that have just one loss on their ledger.
DIVISION 1 DOUBLES OUTLOOK: Seniors Ethan Budiono and John Massart of Marquette join forces to form the top-seeded doubles team. They have yet to lose this season with a 13-0 record. Budiono qualified in singles play the past two seasons and finished fourth last year. He finished third at State in doubles play as a freshman in 2014. Massart is a three-time singles qualifier with a sixth-place finish in 2015 on his resume. Senior Jack Steinberger and junior Eli Winter of Nicolet are seeded second with a 26-2 record. The tandem placed fifth last season after Steinberger advanced to the quarterfinals in 2015 with a different partner and won a first-round match in 2014. Senior Zach Wolfe and sophomore Sam Rechek of Eau Claire Memorial comprise the third-seeded tandem with an 18-4 tally this season. Wolfe is a four-time qualifier in the doubles competition. He has advanced to the quarterfinals the past two seasons with a different partner. Seniors Grant Mauthe and Carter Brown of Neenah received the fourth seed with their 19-4 record. Mauthe finished runner-up last season with a different partner and is a four-time qualifier. Brown advanced to the third round with a different teammate a year ago. Seniors Tucker Gabriel and Sydan Parker of Homestead are the fifth-seeded duo with a record of 19-4. Gabriel advanced to the third round with a different partner last year after qualifying in 2015. Parker also qualified last season with a different teammate and advanced to the third round. Senior James Paradisin and Austin Zellner of Waunakee are seeded sixth with a 13-1 record. Paradisin has previous State Tournament experience as a singles player, qualifying last season and in 2015. Senior Andrew Zhou and freshman Jacob Munz of Monona Grove were chosen as the seventh seed with a 23-1 record this year. Zhou advanced to the third round in the doubles bracket with a different partner a year ago. The tandem of senior Caleb Schifano and junior Noah Guillermo of Marquette are seeded eighth with a 13-2 record. Guillermo finished fourth last season with a different partner, and Schifano finished fifth with a different partner in 2015. Massart and Budiono are the only undefeated tandem in the bracket.
DIVISION 2 SINGLES OUTLOOK: Junior Casey Johnson of Kohler was bestowed the top seed after winning the championship last season and compiling a 17-0 record thus far this season. As a freshman in 2015, he finished third. Senior Juan Perez of The Prairie School is the #2 seed for the third straight season. He has finished runner-up the past two seasons and was third his freshman campaign in 2014. He enters State Tournament play this season with a 25-1 record. Freshman Pablo Dale of Brookfield Academy has had a stellar first season with an 18-4 record, which has earned him the third seed. Another freshman that has burst on the tennis scene this season is Jon Sadowski of New Berlin West. He has been awarded the fourth seed with a 22-2 mark. Junior George Wong of Dominican was issued the fifth seed with a 16-4 record. He qualified last season and advanced to the second round before being eliminated from title contention. Senior Cecil Lingard of Edgewood, a four-time qualifier, is seeded sixth with a 12-3 record. He placed fifth last season and was sixth in 2015. As a freshman in 2014, he won his first-round match-up before being ousted from the championship pursuit. Senior Andrew Liu of The Prairie School qualifies in the singles bracket for the third straight season. He is the seventh seed with a record of 24-1. His furthest advance in the tournament was to the second round last season. Senior Silas Setterstrom of Monroe is the eighth seed with a 17-9 record. He qualified for the first time last season and lost his match in the opening round. Johnson remains the only undefeated player in the division.
DIVISION 2 DOUBLES OUTLOOK: Senior Jason Tan and junior Liam Matthews of Brookfield Academy are the #1 seed with a 20-2 record. Tan qualifies for the fourth straight year. He placed fifth last year and sixth in 2015 with a different partner. Matthews has qualified the past two seasons in singles play. Senior Andrew Diedrich and junior Mitchell Teuteberg of Catholic Memorial return to State as a tandem for the second straight season. The duo placed fourth a year ago. Teuteberg also qualified in 2015 and won a match with a different partner. They enter play this week as the #2 seed with a 27-1 record. Senior Jacob Ruud and junior Peter Lamberton of The Prairie School are the third seed with a 19-3 mark. Each qualified last year with different partners. Ruud advanced to the third round by defeating Lamberton and his partner in the second round. Shorewood’s senior tandem of James Ewing and JJ Nelson are 16-6 this season, which earns them the fourth seed. Ewing qualified last season with a different partner and won a first-round match. Senior Ryan Scheidt and junior Connor Roop of Aquinas are 20-2 this season and the fifth seed in the bracket. They qualified last season and lost in the opening round of play. Juniors David Horak and Konnor Barth of Xavier qualify for the first time and were issued the sixth seed with an 18-4 record. Junior John McTernan and Nicholas Harron of Kenosha St. Joseph are the seventh seed with a 15-6 record. McTernan gained State experience last season and fell in his first-round match with a different partner. Seniors Cal Papineau and Jack Schill of Shorewood are the eighth seed and enter the tournament as the only undefeated team in the bracket at 22-0.
