State Boys Individual TennIs Preview

THE TOURNAMENT:  The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys State Individual Tennis Championships will be held Thursday through Saturday, June 4-6 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, Wis. Action will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and resume at 9 a.m. Friday. Competition on Saturday begins at 8:30 a.m. Ticket prices are $6 per session.

ON THE AIR:  A 30-minute highlight program of the 2015 Boys State Individual Tennis Tournament will air on FS Wisconsin on July 13 at 6 p.m.

LAST YEAR:  Top-seeded Felix Corwin of Brookfield East captured the Division 1 singles title for the second consecutive season by defeating teammate David Horneffer 6-3, 6-3 in the final. In Division 1 doubles play, the fourth-seeded tandem of Patrick Krill and Henry Termuehlen of Brookfield East defeated third-seeded Ben Wait and Eric Stodola of Germantown in the championship match 6-3, 4-6, 7-6(2). Zane Navratil of The Prairie School won his third consecutive Division 2 singles title by defeating second-seeded Kai Sane of University School in the championship match 6-1, 6-4. In Division 2 doubles play, Top-seeded Mike Mirsberger and Tommy Matoska of Catholic Memorial captured the title with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over second-seeded Nick Williams and Nate Calawerts of Notre Dame in the final. 

DIVISION 1 SINGLES OUTLOOK:  Junior David Horneffer of Brookfield East qualifies for the tournament for the third straight season, attempting to improve on his runner-up finish from a year ago.  He has been bestowed the top seed in the tournament with an undefeated 20-0 record. Sophomore Jake Van Emburgh of Middleton is also undefeated in a limited number of matches this season at 9-0. He received the second seed after placing third at State as a freshman last season. Horneffer’s teammate at Brookfield East, sophomore Robert Krill, is the third seed with a 23-1 mark this season. He finished fifth in his freshman campaign a year ago. Senior Jack Dykema of West De Pere moves up from Division 2 to be granted the fourth seed. The three-year qualifier finished fourth in Division 2 last year after participating in the Division 1 bracket in 2012 and 2013. He has compiled a 27-1 record this season. The fifth seed belongs to senior Calin Dumitrescu of Nicolet, who is a four-year qualifier. He has compiled a 23-5 record this season after advancing to the quarterfinals last year on the heels of winning a pair of matches at State in 2013. He also qualified as a freshman in 2012, but fell in his opening round match. Junior Doug Francken is the third Brookfield East qualifier among the top six seeds. He enters play with a 19-1 record. He placed sixth last season after winning a pair of matches at State as a freshman in 2013. The second Middleton player to receive a seed is senior Geri Uj. The first-time qualifier is the seventh seed with an 8-0 mark this season. A trio of Marquette players comprise the 8-10 seeds. Sophomore John Massart is seeded eighth with a 17-4 record this season. He qualified and won his first-round match last season as a freshman. Senior Alex Rokosz enters the tournament seeded ninth with a 20-5 record. A three-time qualifier, he won a pair of matches last season after falling in the first round in 2013. Sophomore Ethan Budiono received the 10th seed with a 16-2 mark this year. He was half the duo that placed third in the doubles competition last season. Other notable qualifiers are junior Ryan Risgaard of Neenah, who will be participating in the State meet for the third year in a row. He lost his first-round match in 2013 and advanced to the second-round matches last season. He enters play with a 20-7 record. Junior Logan Pepperl of Eau Claire Memorial won a match at State last season and returns as the #12 seed with a 20-9 record. Senior Kevin Ballecer of Nicolet, the 13th seed with a 22-4 mark this season, won two matches at State the past two seasons. 

DIVISION 1 DOUBLES OUTLOOK:  Defending champions Henry Termuehlen, a senior, and junior Patrick Krill of Brookfield East return to defend their title. However, they are only afforded the third seed with their 19-3 record this season. The tandem earned a sixth-place finish in 2013. Senior Kyran Young and junior Nick Kallman of Marquette received the #1 seed with an 8-2 record. Kallman won a pair of matches at State last season with a different partner. Junior Jack Steinberger  and senior Brett Conard of Nicolet are the #2 seed with a 23-5 mark. With a different partner, Steinberger advanced to the third round last season. The senior duo of Kyle Wogahn and sophomore Zach Wolfe of Eau Claire Memorial are 16-1 this season, and they’ve been dealt the fourth seed. Wolfe gained experience by qualifying last season with another partner. Senior Aaron Kubiak and junior Alan Desai of Neenah won two matches last year and are back as the fifth-seeded tandem. They enter action with an 18-4 record. The sixth-seeded duo is seniors Tarun Jella and Danny Schoen of Brookfield Central. They have posted a 21-5 tally this season. Jella is a four-time qualifier, each year with a different partner. He qualified and won a first-round match in 2012, finished fourth in 2013 and won a pair of matches last season. Juniors Johnny Zanotti and Mitch Pralle of Arrowhead are seeded seventh with a 23-6 mark. Zanotti gained State experience last season, qualifying with a different partner. The eighth seeded duo is senior David Sinense and sophomore Caleb Schifano of Marquette. They are undefeated in a limited amount of matches this year at 10-0. 

DIVISION 2 SINGLES OUTLOOK: Sophomore Kai Sane of  University School was selected as the #1 seed with his 18-7 record. He is the highest of three second-year players seeded in the top four. He placed runner-up last season. Sophomore Juan Perez of The Prairie School placed third last season with his only defeat coming to eventual champion Zane Navratil. He is the #2 seed this season with a 25-2 record entering the State meet. Freshman Casey Johnson of Kohler was issued the #3 seed. He has posted a 19-1 mark to this point of his initial campaign. Sophomore Cecil Lingard of Edgewood is seeded fourth with his 20-5 record. He qualified as a freshman last season and won his first-round match. Senior Will Conley of Brookfield Academy is the fifth seed with a 17-9 mark. He is a three-time State qualifier, advancing to the quarterfinals last season after winning a match in the opening round in 2013. Junior Matt Primozic of Plymouth qualifies for the second straight season. He is seeded sixth with an 18-4 record after winning his first-round match at State last year. Edgewood’s Noah Colletti, a junior, is seeded seventh with an undefeated 15-0 mark this season, and junior Jack Collison of University School is seeded eighth with a 12-4 record. He qualified two seasons ago and fell in his first-round match. 

DIVISION 2 DOUBLES OUTLOOK:  Juniors Zach Janssen and Charlie Parish of Notre Dame team up to form the top-seeded doubles pair with a 20-3 mark. The duo placed fifth at State last season. Seniors Charlie Kirsh and Billy O’Brien of Edgewood are seeded second with a 16-1 mark. Kirsch has qualified for the third consecutive season, each with a different teammate. The University School pair consisting of senior Andrew Buchanan and junior Zach Schneck return to the tournament as the third seed. They have compiled a 12-10 record this year coming off last year’s sixth-place finish in the State Tournament. Junior Michael Rajchel and sophomore Jason Tan of Brookfield Academy are the fourth seed with a 12-12 record. They won their opening round match last season before falling to the top seed and eventual champion. Junior Tommy Matoska of Catholic Memorial won the State doubles title last season with a different partner. This season, he is paired with senior Christian Erickson to form the fifth seed with a 15-1 record. Junior Gabe Binversie and sophomore Gavin Binversie of Plymouth are seeded sixth, earning their second straight berth in the tournament field. The tandem of brothers have compiled an 18-7 record this season after winning their first-round match last year at the tournament.
