State Boys Golf Championships Preview

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS: The 93rd Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys Golf Championships will be held Monday and Tuesday, June 4-5, at the University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis. Competition will begin at 7 a.m. on both days. Practice rounds Sunday begin at 7 a.m.  Tee time assignments for Sunday practice and for Monday's play are posted on the boys golf page of the WIAA website. 

THE FORMAT:  The competition features 16 teams and 24 individual qualifiers in Division 1, and eight teams and 12 individuals in Divisions 2 and 3. Weather permitting, all competitors will play 36 holes, including 18 holes on each day. The lowest scores from the first day will have the later tee times Tuesday. 

THE FIELD:  In Division 1, the field consists of the top two teams from each of the eight sectionals. In Divisions 2 and 3, the top two teams from each of the four sectionals qualify. The top three individuals, who are not members of a qualifying team in each sectional, also qualify for the meet.

LAST YEAR:  Arrowhead was the Division 1 State champion by shooting a four-player, 36-hole score of 602, which was four strokes better than runner-up Marquette’s 606. Piercen Hunt of Arrowhead was the division’s medalist with a 36-hole score of 141. Edgewood won the Division 2 title with a four-player, 36-hole score of 623. Lodi placed second with a score of 645. Hunter Pipik of New Berlin West earned medalist honors by shooting a 141. St. Mary’s Springs won the Division 3 title for the third consecutive season, scoring a 648, which was 27 shots better than runner-up Eleva-Strum with 675. Matthew Higley of Eleva-Strum shot 150 to earn medalist honors.

CHAMPIONSHIP NOTES:  Madison West holds the record for the most team golf titles with 15. Osseo-Fairchild is next in line with nine, followed by Arrowhead with eight and Racine Park with seven. Madison West has also produced the most individual champions with nine. Arrowhead is the only school to have won four straight team titles (2007-10), and there are four other schools that have won three straight championships. Osseo-Fairchild did it in 1994-96; Racine did it in 1923-25; Madison West accomplished the feat in 1934-36 and 1960-62; Middleton did it from 1997-99; and St. Mary’s Springs is the last to do it from 2015-17. Bill Heim of Green Bay Preble and Jeremy Lyons of Glenwood City are the only individuals to win medalist honors three times. Heim won from 1986-88 and Lyons from 1997-99.

TEAMS COMPETING:  The schools qualifying for the State meet in Division 1 are Arrowhead, Badger, Brookfield Central, Eau Claire Memorial, Fond du Lac, Franklin, Janesville Parker, Kaukauna, Kettle Moraine, Marquette, Middleton, Notre Dame, River Falls, Sheboygan North, Verona and Westosha Central. Teams qualifying in Division 2 are Edgerton, Edgewood, Kewaskum, Lakeland, Peshtigo, Rice Lake, Waupun and Winneconne. Qualifying teams in Division 3 are Abundant Life Christian/Madison Country Day, Eleva-Strum, Luck/Frederic, Manawa, New Glarus, Pacelli, St. Mary’s Springs and Sheboygan Lutheran.

DIVISION 1 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS:  The individual qualifiers in Division 1 are senior Jack Shinners of Antigo, senior Erik Hopp of Appleton North, sophomore Preston Cedergren of Bay Port, junior Zak Kulka of Beaver Dam; senior Adam Denk of Cedarburg, junior Ben Peloquin of D.C. Everest, junior Mason McGee of De Pere, junior James Johnson of Greendale, junior Sam Mendoza of Greenfield, sophomore Carson Brock of Holmen, sophomore Josh Teplin and senior Ethan Padgett of Homestead, sophomore Russell Dettmering of Merrill, senior Tucker Dunk of Milton, senior Jake Schroekenthaler of Monona Grove, junior Mason Schulz of Mukwonago, senior Ryan Candell of Oregon, junior Andrew Clement of Pewaukee, senior Cade Knaus of Plymouth, senior Josh Weber of Racine Case, junior Evan Thomas of Stevens Point, junior Connor Brown of Union Grove, junior Sean Murphy of Waunakee, and senior Adam Garski of Wauwatosa East/West.

DIVISION 2 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS:  The individual qualifiers in Division 2 are junior Vince Omernik of Amherst, senior Alex Pellegrini of Brookfield Academy, senior Ryan Erickson of Catholic Memorial, senior Solomon Zarling of Kettle Moraine Lutheran, junior Lukas Heckmann of Lakeside Lutheran, junior Matt Wagner of Marinette, senior John Birnbaum of Mosinee, sophomore Jared Weber of Neillsville/Loyal, junior Trevor Priem of Northwestern, senior Zach White of Platteville, senior Daniel Nitardy of Luther Prep, and freshman Elijah Bartel of Waupaca.

DIVISION 3 INDIVIDUAL QUALIFIERS:  The Division 3 individual qualifiers are senior Mason Holcomb of Argyle/Pecatonica, sophomore Brice Klabunde of Cameron, junior Kasey Casper of Coleman, senior Shane Bauer of Crivitz, senior Joshua Johnson of Coulee Christian/Providence Academy, freshman Dawson Kurth of Durand, senior Dan Dunn of Lourdes Academy/Valley Christian, senior Shane Sonnentag of Marathon, senior Austin Schnell of Mishicot, senior Grant Boyson of St. Mary Catholic, senior Tyler Leach of Spring Valley, and senior Anil Jergens of Wisconsin Heights.
