Muskego, Brookfield East, DeForest Win State Football Championships

MADISON, Wis. – Champions were determined in Divisions 1, 2 and 3 on the second day of the 2019 State Football Championships held at Camp Randall Stadium Friday.

Muskego (14-0) won the Division 1 championship for the second year in a row by defeating Bay Port 21-10 Friday night.

Bay Port scored first on a 25-yard field goal with 25 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The Warriors responded with a touchdown on their ensuing drive of 65 yards in five plays. Alexander Current scored on the 5-yard run to give Muskego a 7-3 lead at the 11:01 mark of the second quarter. Connor Grohman scored the Warriors’ second touchdown of the quarter on a 1-yard run to increase their lead to 14-3 at the half.

Muskego added to its lead in the third quarter with a 60-yard fumble return for a touchdown by Bryan Guehn with 6:24 showing on the clock. Bay Port scored a touchdown to cut its deficit to 21-10 with seven minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but were unable to produce points in their final two possessions.

Current and Joshua Bulski led the Muskego offense with 55 and 52 yards rushing, respectively. Connor Grohman completed two of the three passes he attempted for 56 yards. Nicholas Maier led the Warriors on defense with 15 tackles, and Anthony Tomczak and Hunter Wohler added double figures in stops with 12 and 11, respectively.

The Pirates outgained the Warriors in total offense yardage 315-195. Isaiah Gash led all rushers with 185 yards on 32 carries. He also caught three passes for 16 yards. Andrew Thomas connected on 11-of-24 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown. Cal Verlanic was the team leader on defense with 12 tackles and a fumble recovery.

Muskego’s second title comes in their third State championship game appearance. Bay Port (13-1) finishes runner-up in its first-ever experience in the championship game.

Brookfield East (12-2) won the Division 2 football championship by hanging on to defeat Waunakee 31-30 at Camp Randall Stadium Friday afternoon.

The game hung in the balance with eight seconds remaining. Waunakee scored a potential game-tying touchdown on a 4-yard toss from Quentin Keene to Randy Vojtisek, but the extra point kick was tipped and sailed outside the uprights, preserving the Spartans' lead.

The Spartans featured a prolific rushing attack led by Donavan Hunt, who rushed for a game-high 227 yards with three touchdowns on 31 carries. Sam McGath contributed 72 yards rushing and a touchdown. He also completed 6-of-13 passes for 33 yards. Brookfield East was led defensively by Nick Pluemer, who was disruptive in recording nine tackles and two fumbles forced, and by Sam McGath with nine tackles, an interception and a recovered fumble.

The Warriors held a 360-332 advantage in total offense yardage for the game, including a Division 2 record 289 yards passing. Keene set the Division 2 championship game record for most completions and passing yards. He completed 25-of-36 passes for 265 yards and three touchdowns. Keene also led the Warriors on the ground with 67 yards and a score. Jordan Wuensch and Andrew Keller led nine different pass catchers with five receptions apiece. On defense, Joe Hauser led all tacklers in the game with 11 stops, including one for lost yardage. He also recorded an interception.

The Spartans win their second title in as many appearances in the final. They also won the championship in 2016. Waunakee finishes runner-up in its 10thState championship game appearance.

DeForest (14-0) completed a perfect season by edging Menasha 8-7 in the Division 3 championship game Friday morning at Camp Randall Stadium

The Norskies snatched a victory from the jaws of defeat with their first lead coming with 32 seconds remaining in the game. 

The turnover-plagued game offered a dramatic finish with Gabe Finley scoring on a 13-yard pass from Trey Schroeder draw the Norskies’ to within a point at 7-6. They converted two-point extra point on a pass from Schroeder to Nolan Hawk to provide the winning margin.

Menasha opened the game with 12-play, 67-yard drive that consumed 6:26 on the clock. Davontre Smith scored on a 9-yard run to give the Bluejays a 7-0 lead.

DeForest was led offensively by Trey Schroeder, who rushed for a team-high 56 yards and threw for 97 yards and a touchdown, completing 6-of-15 passes. Defensively, Kody Kuchar made nine tackles, including two for lost yardage, and Devin Morand-Rivers had nine tackles a fumble recovery.

Cole Popp rushed for a game-high 62 yards and completed 11-of-20 passes for 80 yards to lead Menasha. Luke Mauer tied a Division 3 championship game record with nine receptions for 65 yards. Miles Tesky and Brady Batchelor each collected seven tackles to pace the Bluejays defense.

Both teams committed four turnovers, which prevented either offenses from gaining any rhythm. The Norskies outgained the Bluejays in yards of total offense, 258-182.

The Norskies won the program’s second State title in their fifth championship game appearance. Menasha (12-2) finishes runner-up in its second appearance in the title game.
