Burlington Claims Div. 1 Spring Baseball Title

Burlington (25-5) came back from a 4-0 deficit with six runs in the last two innings to capture the Division 1 title with a 6-4 victory over Arrowhead (29-3) Thursday evening at Neuroscience Group Field in Grand Chute.

The Warhawks went right to work with the bats in the first inning to grab a 4-0 advantage. Tanner Williams reached on an infield single to start the inning, and Dominic Clementi followed with an RBI triple to right. Clementi raced home during the next at-bat on a wild pitch. After two outs, Jonathan Duranso singled and was driven in on Josh Becker’s double down the left-field line. Logan Kellogg capped the scoring in the inning with a grounder through the right side of the infield to score Becker.

The Demons missed a chance to cut into their deficit in the third. After loading the bases with two outs, Aaron Sturdevant hit a hard line drive headed for right field that was snatched by a leaping Kellogg at second base to retire the side.

Burlington broke through with two runs in the sixth inning on two hits and two Warhawk throwing errors. Aaron Mutter led off with a single and advanced on an errant attempt at a force out at second. Sturdevant then single to left field to drive in Mutter. The second run of the inning came on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Cal Tully.

The Demons scored four times in the top seventh inning. After Tully and Zach Campbell singled to begin the inning, Bryan Sturdevant sacrificed to move both runners into scoring position. Mutter was intentionally walked, and Dale Damon delivered a two-run single to tie the game at 4. Aaron Sturtevant gave the Demons the lead on a suicide squeeze bunt to score Mutter, and Tully added an insurance run with an RBI single to center field.

Tully went 3-for-3 with two RBIs for the Demons. Campbell, Mutter and Aaron Sturtevant collected two hits each to contribute to the 11-hit attack. Tully was credited with the victory in relief. He pitched 5 1/3 innings without allowing a run and striking out two. Zach Campbell pitched a scoreless seventh inning to record the save.

Jonathan Duranso had the only multi-hit game for the Warhawks with two. Derek Crawley started the game for the Warhawks. He went six innings and gave up four runs on nine hits. Andrew Miller was charged with the loss in relief.
