Boys State Golf Tournament Completes First Round

Three divisions finished play on day one of the 2016 State Boys Golf Tournament at University Ridge in Madison Monday.

 Marquette set a torrid pace with a four-player score of 295 to lead in the team standings. The score for the round is the best since Madison La Follette shot a second-round score of 293 in 2003.

 Middleton is nine strokes back in second place with 304, and Bay Port and Badger are in a tie for third place at 310.

 Emmet Herb of Middleton is the individual leader, shooting a 4-under-par 68 through 18 holes. David Keane and Harrison Ott of Marquette are tied for second place, five strokes back at 1-over par 73.

 In Division 2, Xavier led throughout the first day and takes a two-stroke lead into the second day with a four-player score of 313. Marinette moved into second place after shooting a 315. Catholic Memorial is third at five strokes behind.

 Last year’s runner-up Matt Bachmann of Sheboygan Falls is tied with Logan Walzer of Lodi atop the Division 2 leaderboard with an even-par 72. Mike McDonald of Hayward is third after shooting a 2-over-par 74.

 Defending champion St. Mary’s Springs leads in the Division 3 team standings after the first round of play by shooting a 321. Cochrane-Fountain City is eight strokes off the place at 329, and Spring Valley is third at 347.

 Tyler Leach of Spring Valley led throughout much of the day and leads the Division 3 field heading into the second day of competition with a 1-over par 73. Austin Schnell of Mishicot trails by a stroke with a 74.

 Play resumes Tuesday with Divisions 2 and 3 teeing off at 7 a.m. Division 1 is scheduled to begin at noon.
