Boys Basketball Championship Saturday Recap

DIVISION 1

Germantown 57, Mukwonago 28

Germantown (28-0) captured its second straight Division 1 championship by topping Mukwonago (23-5) 57-28 in the Division 1 championship Saturday night at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wis.

The Indians scored first, but that would be the only lead they would. The defending champions scored the next 13 points to take control of the game. The Indians battled back to get within five points with a minute left to play in the half, but Luke Fischer added a lay-up for the Warhawks to increase the lead to 25-18 at the half.

Mukwonago struggled shooting in the first half, hitting on just 27 percent of its shots. The shooting woes would only continue in the second half, hitting only 3-of-21 shots from the floor. Germantown increased its lead to double-digits at 34-22 with 1:13 in the third quarter and would enjoy a double-digit advantage the rest of the game.

The final margin of victory was produced by a 19-0 run by the Warhawks in the final 5:23 of the game. Fischer led the Germantown with 17 points, and Nick Blohm led Mukwonago with nine points.

DIVISION 2

Pulaski 48, Wisconsin Lutheran 40

Pulaski (24-4) won its first State boys basketball championship in school history with a 48-40 victory over Wisconsin Lutheran in the Division 2 title game Saturday evening.

The Red Raiders imposed their deliberate style in the first half, limiting possessions with offensive efficiency. They shot 64 percent from the field to take a 21-13 lead into the locker room at the half. Their 1-3-1 defense limited the Vikings to 17 shots and 23 percent shooting through the first two quarters.

Just when Wisconsin Lutheran appeared to be staging a comeback in the third quarter and pull within four points, Pulaski scored seven straight points. Cody Wichmann connected on a 3-pointer and a lay-up off a steal to extend the lead to 11 at the end of the period.

The Red Raiders eliminated any chance of a Vikings comeback victory by connecting on 11-of-14 free throws in the fourth quarter, preventing the Vikings from getting their deficit any lower than five points.

Wichmann led the Red Raiders with 17 points, five rebounds and four assists. Luke VanLanen and Jordan added 13 and 10 points, respectively. Deiondre Cunningham led Wisconsin Lutheran with 19 points.

DIVISION 3

Aquinas 53, Lodi 48

Aquinas withstood a late comeback attempt to defeat Lodi 53-48 in the Division 3 championship game Saturday afternoon.

The Blugolds opened the fourth quarter with a Michael Conway lay-up to increase their lead to its largest of the game at 19 points, 43-24. Three Kris Seffrood 3-pointers fueled 20-4 run to cut the Aquinas lead to three with just over two minutes remaining. However, the comeback bid fell short with the Blugolds’ precision free throw shooting down the stretch, hitting six-of-six from the line.

A pair of 3-pointers by Nolan Ritter and a one by Bronson Koenig paced the Aquinas to a 13-8 first quarter lead. The Blugolds extended the lead in the second quarter and led 24-12 at the half. The Blue Devils narrowed the margin to eight points with 4:30 remaining in the third quarter, but Aquinas went on a 10-1 run to end the period and set up the fourth quarter drama.

Koenig led the Blugolds with 16 points and five assists. Ritter added 15 points and Conway chipped in with 12. Seffrood led Lodi with 19 points, and Jordan Shea contributed 11 points, five assists and six steals.

It was the Blugolds' fourth State championship.

DIVISION 4

Domincan 57, Auburndale 44

Dominican won its second straight Division 4 championship with a 57-44 win over Auburndale Saturday.

Wilson scored 26 points to lead the Knights scoring, including their final 14 points of the game to secure the title. Stone’s formidable presence in the paint was evident by his 22 points, 16 points and three blocks. Dominican scored 38 points with shots in the lane.

The game was tied at 17-17 midway through the second quarter, but a pair of Stone dunks ignited a 12-0 Knight run. The Apaches were able to cut the deficit to 29-23 by the half and to get within one in the third quarter, but were never able to get back to even. The Knights clinched the game by scoring eight of the game’s final nine points.

It was Dominican's fourth State title.
