Board of Control Conducts December Meeting

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Board of Control conducted its December meeting and approved a number of action items at the executive staff office today.

The Board approved an Executive Staff recommendation to place a moratorium on requests to move between 8-player and 11-player football sponsorship or enter into a football co-op arrangement until Dec. 1, 2020, which aligns with the conference realignment timeline. Programs declaring a change to sponsor 8- or 11-player football or co-op in 2020 will be eligible for participation in the 2022 season.

The Board also voted to support a revision to the membership’s tournament Harassment Policies and Procedure guidelines. Unacceptable behaviors by participants or spectators, if witnessed by event management, security and/or supervisors, will result in violators being removed from the premises.

Among the other action items approved by the Board were the 2018-19 independent audit report provided by BDO, general fund statements, general fund payments, the deferred liability fund report for September, as well as the 2020-21 meeting dates calendar.

Topics discussed by the Board included information on membership participation numbers the past 25 years, awareness of two potential membership-initiated amendments to the Constitution, updates on the conference realignment task force process and game disqualification penalties in hockey, as well as a review of the fall tournaments.

The Board also received liaison reports from John Ashley of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards, Mike Thompson of the Department of Public Instruction, Nathan Delany of the Wisconsin Athletic Directors Association and Pam Foegen of the National Federation of State High School Associations Board of Directors.

The membership of the WIAA oversees interscholastic athletic programs for 511 senior high schools and 46 junior high/middle level schools in its membership. It sponsors 27 championship Tournament series for boys and girls in 2019-20. For more information, please contact the WIAA office at (715) 344-8580.
