Stoughton, Mukwonago Advance to Division 1 Team Wrestling Title Match

MADISON, Wis. – Defending champion Stoughton (20-0) advances to the Division 1 championship match for the fifth consecutive season with a 45-18 victory over Kaukauna in the semifinals of the State Team Wrestling Tournament at the UW Field House in Madison Friday evening.

The Vikings won 10 of the 14 weight classes in the match. Cade Spilde, Brooks Empey, Nicolar Rivera and Ethan Devore each record pins to lead the Vikings to victory in the semifinal. The Galloping Ghosts were led by pins from Bryson Alsteen and Jaden Verhagen.

The top-seeded Vikings advance to dual second-seeded Mukwonago in the championship match Saturday afternoon. Stoughton advanced to the semifinals with a 50-21 win over eighth-seeded Arrowhead in the quarterfinals earlier in the evening.

Mukwonago (26-0) trailed through eight weights in its semifinal match-up with third-seeded Marshfield, but won the final six bouts to cruise to a 44-17 victory. The Indians won nine of the 14 bouts in the match. Aaron Schmitz, Caleb Willmann and Tyler Pitcel each recorded pins, and Tyler Goebel recorded a technical fall to lead the Indians. Bentley Schwanebeck-Ostermann led the Tigers with a fall. 

Kaukauna advanced to the semifinals with a 42-25 win over Holmen in the quarterfinals. In other quarterfinal action, Marshfield downed Burlington 39-26, and Mukwonago rolled to a 64-0 shutout win over Slinger.

The State Team Wrestling Tournament resumes Saturday at 10 a.m. with the semifinals in Divisions 2 and 3. The finals for all three divisions are scheduled for 3 p.m.
