Singles and Doubles Players Earn State Crowns

MADISON, Wis. –  Two divisions of singles players and doubles teams were crowned champions at the 2022 State Boys Tennis Tournament played at Nielsen Tennis Stadium Saturday.

Sophomore Solomon Dunsirn of Neenah, the second seed, won the Division 1 singles championship with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over fifth-seeded Ethan Bo, a freshman from Middleton, in title match. Dunsirn improved his record this season to 36-1 after he gained valuable experience at State last season, advancing to the quarterfinals before falling from title contention.

Senior Tyler Nelson of Waunakee, the #1 seed, placed third in the bracket with a 6-3, 6-3 win over third-seeded junior Ethan Yu of Madison West in the third-place match.

In Division 1 doubles play, the third-seeded team of seniors Alex Deubel and Ben Brandel of Arrowhead defeated the fourth-seeded tandem of senior Jacob Baldwin and sophomore Nikko Vilwock of Sun Prairie 6-1, 6-2 to win the championship. Deubel and Brandel improved their record to 23-2 this season after placing sixth at State last season.

The top-seeded team of seniors Henry Irwin and Reed Cullen of Brookfield East, the former defending champions, finished third by winning their third-place match 4-6, 6-1, 10-2 over the second-seeded duo of seniors Nolan Kubiak and Kahled Salek of Neenah.

In Division 2, junior Max Watchmaker of the University School of Milwaukee won the singles championship as the #1 seed in the bracket. He downed the second seed, senior Teddy Wong of Dominican/Eastbrook Academy, 6-1, 6-2 to earn the gold medal and improve his mark to 21-3 this year after advancing to the quarterfinals a year ago. Wong places runner-up after placing third in 2021 and sixth in 2019.

After finishing fourth last season, senior Dayne Lindow of East Troy, the fourth seed, placed third by winning the third-place match over unseeded Rohan Singh, a freshman from Brookfield Academy, by set scores of 6-3, 6-0.

In Division 2 doubles play, the brother tandem of senior Jack Hehli and freshman Kyle Hehli of West Salem remained undefeated with an 18-0 record to capture the title. Jack Hehli transitioned to doubles after placing sixth in singles play a year ago. The fifth-seeded duo defeated the second-seeded team of senior Pranav Gogineni and sophomore Vibhu Guda of Brookfield Academy 6-1, 6-1 to win with gold medal. Gogineni won the title last season with a different partner.

The top-seeded team entering the tournament, seniors Shaan Sharma and Joe Zimmerman of University School of Milwaukee, won the third-place match by a 6-4, 6-3 decision over sophomores Nick Bittner and Nate Hall of Xavier, who were seeded third. Sharma finished runner-up with a different partner last season.

The State Boys Team Tennis Tournament is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, June 10-11 at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
