Brookfield Central/East Capture Div. 1 Boys Swimming & Diving Team Title

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The Brookfield Central/East Co-op won the Division 1 team championship and three individual event records were set at the 2022 State Boys Swimming & Diving Championships Waukesha South High School Natatorium Saturday.

The Brookfield Central/East Co-op won the combined program’s first State title by compiling 208 points. Arrowhead was second with 188 points, and Madison West was third with 182 points. Brookfield Central won two Division 2 team championships as a stand-alone program in 1994 and 1995, and Brookfield East won Division 2 titles as a stand-alone program in 1996 and 1999.

Senior Drew Bennett of Madison Memorial broke the Division 1 record in the diving competition with a score of 668.75 after placing runner-up in 2020. It took his stellar performance to hold off senior Jan Lanser of West Bend West/East, the defending champion in the event, who finished second with a score of 629.20, which would have set the record if not for Bennett’s performance.

Senior William Hayon of Sheboygan North raced to the championship in the 100 butterfly in record-breaking fashion, posting a time of 47.14 after finishing runner-up in 2021 and fifth in 2019.

A trio of swimmers won a pair of individual event titles, including senior Ozan Kalafat, who swam to titles in both the 200-yard freestyle and the 500 freestyle. He won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:37.42, and he shattered the Division 1 record en route to earning the gold medal in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:27.75 after finishing fifth as a freshman in 2019.

Senior Sam Bork of Appleton North/East won the sprint freestyles, capturing the 50 freestyle championship in a time of 20.10 and the 100 freestyle crown in a time of 44.49.

Junior Lance Johnson of Arrowhead won the 200 individual medley and the 100 breaststroke. He finished ahead of all competitors in the 200 I.M. with a time of 1:48.82 after placing third last season and 11th in 2020. He outpaced the rest of the field in the breaststroke with a time of 54.91 after a third-place finish a year ago to go with an eighth-place finish in 2020.

Junior Stuart Seymour of Brookfield Central/East won the 100 backstroke with a time of 48.53, edging senior teammate Michael Long, who won the event last season. Seymour won his second gold of the meet when he joined Long and seniors Brady Miller and Jonathan Day to earn the State title in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:31.14.

Middleton won both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. The quartet of seniors Blaise Lin and Venden Berge, and juniors Jack Madoch and Nick Chirafisi were victorious in the 200 freestyle relay in a time of 1:23.93. Berge, Madoch and Chirafisi came back later to team up with junior Jack Madigan to win the 400 freestyle in a time of 3:04.62.
