Edgewood Wins Div. 3 Girls Basketball Championship

Edgewood (25-3) celebrates its first State title by dicarding Martin Luther 51-30 in the Division 3 championship game of the State Girls Basketball Tournament at the Resch Center in Green Bay Saturday afternoon.

Both teams struggled with marksmanship in the first half. The Crusaders shot 26 percent from the field but led the Spartans, who shot 22 percent in the period including 0-for-6 from three-point range, 19-11. Edgewood’s shooting fortunes changed significantly in the second half, converting on 50 percent of its shots; however, the Spartans’ shooting woes continued, finishing the game at 28 percent from the field.

Edgewood increased its lead to double digits early in the second half at 26-13. The closest the Spartans could get in the final 15 minutes of the game was eight points, and the Crusaders closed the game by outscoring Martin Luther 15-5 in the last eight minutes.

Estella Moschkau scored a game-high 20 points for the Crusaders. Katie Meriggioli added 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Caitlin Link chipped in with 10 points. Emily Hafemann and Emma Kallas were the leading scorers for Martin Luther (26-2) with seven points.

The Crusaders win the title in their second appearance at State. The first came last season, which resulted in a loss in the semifinals. Martin Luther finishes runner-up in its first State appearance.
