Young Coggs Prep Wins Division 5 Title

Young Coggs Prep (21-5) won its first State championship in its first-ever appearance with a 56-50 victory over Hillsboro (23-6) in the Division 5 final.

The Eagles started the game scoring the first five points, but the Tigers responded by scoring eight of the next nine points to take their only lead of the game. Young Coggs Prep regained the lead later in the first quarter and led by as many as 11 before the Tigers cut the halftime deficit to 26-22.

The Eagles upped their lead to as many as 12 in the second half, and again the Tigers would battle back to get within three in the fourth quarter. Young Coggs held off the Tigers at the end by hitting 10-of-16 free throws in the final 3:30 of the game. 

Young Coggs made 28-of-45 free throws in the game, which set Division 5 records for most made and attempted in a game. The Eagles also set the tournament record in both categories.

Tiwon Jones led the Eagles with 24 points and six steals. He made 14-of-21 free throws, which set Division 5 records for most made and attempted by an individual. DeAngelo Crawford added 20 points and dished out five assists.

Hillsboro was led by Max Stockwell with a game-high 28 points and 12 rebounds. The Tigers finish runner-up in their first-ever tournament appearance.
