State Boys Individual Tennis Tournament Preview

THE MEET:  The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Boys State Individual Tennis Championships will be held Thursday through Saturday, June 2-4 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium on the University of Wisconsin campus in Madison, Wis. Action will begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday and resume at 9 a.m. Friday. Competition on Saturday begins at 8:30 a.m. Ticket prices are $6 per session.

THE SCHEDULE:
Thursday, June 2
10:30 a.m. - First-round Matches

Friday, June 3
9 a.m. - Action through Quarterfinals

Saturday, June 4
8:30 a.m. - Consolation Semifinals
9 a.m. - Championship Semifinals
10 a.m. - Fifth-place Matches
11 a.m. - Third-place Matches
11:30 a.m. - Championship Matches

LAST YEAR:  Second-seeded Jake Van Emburgh of Middleton won the Division 1 singles title by defeating top-seeded David Horneffer of Brookfield East in the final 7-5, 6-1. In Division 1 doubles play, the top-seeded tandem of Kyran Young and Nick Kallman of Marquette defeated defending champion and third-seeded Patrick Krill and Henry Termuehlen of Brookfield East in the championship match 6-2, 6-4. Kai Sane of University School won the Division 2 singles title by defeating second-seeded Juan Perez of The Prairie School, who retired with an injury in the championship match trailing 6-7 (8), 0-1. In Division 2 doubles play, third-seeded Zach Schneck and Andrew Buchanan of University School captured the title with a 6-3, 6-7(1), 6-4 victory over fifth-seeded Tommy Matoska and Christian Erickson of Catholic Memorial in the final. 

DIVISION 1 SINGLES OUTLOOK:  Senior David Horneffer of Brookfield East qualifies for the tournament for the fourth straight season, and he receives the #1 seed for the second straight year. He has finished runner-up the past two seasons. Horneffer has compiled an undefeated 18-0 record entering the State Tournament. His teammate, junior Robert Krill, is the second seed. He too possesses an 18-0 mark this season. He finished fourth last season and fifth in 2014. Senior Ryan Risgaard of Neenah possesses the #3 seed. He qualifies for the fourth time after finishing fifth last season. This season, he has recorded a 24-2 mark. Sophomore Colt Tegtmeier of Madison Memorial received the #4 seed with a 30-2 record. He qualified last season and won two matches before being eliminated from title contention. Junior Ethan Mardanus-Budiono of Marquette is seeded fifth with a 14-7 mark. He won two matches at State last year after he placed third in the State doubles tournament in 2014. His teammate, junior John Massart, qualifies for the third straight season. He is seeded sixth with a 14-5 record after placing sixth last year. Junior Xavier Sanga of Middleton is the seventh seed with an 18-5 record this season, and senior Mark Johnson of Hudson is the #8 seed with an undefeated 22-0 record. He won two matches before being ousted from title contention at State last season. Junior Jackson Atassi of Neenah is the ninth seed. He won a match at State last season and has recorded a 23-4 mark this season. 

DIVISION 1 DOUBLES OUTLOOK: Defending champion Nick Kallman, a senior from Marquette, qualifies with a different partner in an attempt to repeat. He teams up with senior Danny Royston to form the #6-seeded duo with an 11-4 record. Senior Patrick Krill of Brookfield East won the doubles title in 2014 and finished runner-up last year with a different partner. He qualifies this season with senior Doug Franken to comprise the #1 seed with an unbeaten 12-0 record. Franken qualified and won a match in singles last year. Senior Alan Desai and junior Grant Mauthe of Neenah were issued the second seed with an unblemished 18-0 record. Desai placed fourth last season with a different partner. Seniors Carlos Flores Komatsu and Henry Mirsberger of Brookfield Central are the third seed with their 15-3 record. The pair qualified last season and won a pair of matches before falling out of title contention. Senior Johnny Zanotti and senior Mitch Pralle of Arrowhead are seeded fourth with a 23-6 mark. They qualified and won their first-round match last season. The fifth seed is assigned to senior Aaron Holman and junior Tucker Gabriel of Homestead. They won two matches at the State Meet last season and have compiled a 25-5 mark this year. The Middleton tandem of seniors Dan Jin and Cody Markel are the #7 seed with a record of 9-1. They gained experience by qualifying last season. Senior Jack Steinberger and sophomore Eli Winter of Nicolet are seeded eighth with a 13-4 record. Steinberger advanced to the quarterfinals last season with a different partner as the #2 seed. Senior Jackson Lindquist and junior Nick LaPoint of Eau Claire North are the #9 seed. They have yet to lose a match this season, entering the State Meet with a 15-0 record. Lindquist qualified the last two seasons with a different partner. Junior Zach Wolfe of Eau Claire Memorial is also qualifying for the third time. He advanced to the quarterfinals last season with a different partner. He teams up with junior Sohil Brahmbhatt this year to comprise the #10 seed with a 22-10 mark.

DIVISION 2 SINGLES OUTLOOK:  Anand Saluja of Brookfield Academy was bestowed the #1 seed with his 18-1 record. He qualified in Division 1 last season as a member of the Brookfield Central program and fell in his  opening match. Junior Juan Perez of The Prairie School is the #2 seed this season after finishing runner-up last season and third in 2014. He enters play with a 25-3 record this season. Senior Jack Collison of University School is seeded third with a 14-6 record. He placed fifth last season and finished third with his partner in doubles play in 2014. Sophomore Casey Johnson of Kohler was issued the #4 seed this year after finishing third a year ago as the #3 seed. He has posted a 23-3 record to this point of the season. Junior Cecil Lingard of Edgewood is seeded fifth with his 18-6 record. He placed sixth in 2015 as the #4 seed. Senior Zach Janssen of Notre Dame is the sixth seed with a 14-11 mark. He is a first-time singles State qualifier after qualifying in doubles the past two seasons. He and his partner placed fifth in 2014. Junior Tommy Calvy of University School qualifies for the second straight season. He is seeded seventh with an 18-4 record after winning his first-round match at State last year. Senior Noah Colletti of Edgewood  is seeded eighth with 22-2 mark this season. He was seeded seventh a year ago and placed sixth.

DIVISION 2 DOUBLES OUTLOOK: Senior Zach Schneck of University School is half the pair that won the State title a year ago. He joins forces with senior Jake Coran to comprise the #1 seed with a 20-3 record this season. Schneck also finished sixth in 2014. Senior Michael Rajchel and junior Jason Tan of Brookfield Academy are the second seed with an 11-8 record. They qualify for the third straight year and are coming off a sixth-place finish last season. Seniors Charlie Parish and Isaac Hingtgen of Notre Dame team up to form the third-seeded doubles pair with a 20-4 mark. Parish and a different partner qualified last season as the #1 seed and was upset in their first match after placing fifth at State in 2014. Seniors Connor Maloney and Thomas Thelen of Edgewood were issued the #4 seed with a 17-3 record. Thelen qualified with a different partner last season resulting in a loss in the opening round. Seniors Adil Bhatia and Bryan Greenen of Brookfield Academy are the fifth seed with a record of 13-2. The duo finished fourth last season. Senior Gabe Binversie and junior Gavin Binversie of Plymouth are seeded sixth, earning their third straight berth in the tournament field. The tandem of brothers has compiled a 23-1 record this season after placing fifth last year. Junior Andrew Diedrich and sophomore Mitchell Teuteberg of Catholic Memorial is the seventh-seeded tandem. They have compiled a 12-4 record this season after Teuteberg gained State experience by qualifying last season and winning a first-round match with a different partner. The eighth seed is the Notre Dame pair of senior Jack Lemkuil and junior Nic Lasecki. Lemkuil qualified for singles play last season, but did not advance.
