Five Earn the Title of Champion at State Volleyball Tournament

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Four girls volleyball teams and one boys volleyball team were crowned champions at the 2022 State Volleyball Tournament Saturday at the Resch Center.

Second-seeded Divine Savior Holy Angels  (43-6) upended former defending champion and top-seeded Oconomowoc (38-2) in the Division 1 championship game by set scores of 25-16, 25-16, 18-25 18-25, 15-13..

With the score tied at 10-10 in the fifth set, the Dashers scored three straight points by forcing a pair of attack errors to go with a service ace to give them a three-point cushion and the momentum to subsequently win the match.

Madison Quest knocked down a match-high 25 kills for the Dashers, and Sophia Wendlick added another 18 with a .417 attack percentage to account for most of the team’s 59 kills in the match. Jordan Czajkowski was credited with assists on 50 of the kills. Defensively, Olivia deGuzman recorded 21 digs to lead five players in double figures, and Bella Lipski and Helena Cesarz each had a hand in six blocks.

The Raccoons were led offensively by Anna Bjork with a team-high 22 kills with a .381 hitting percentage. Cordella Kearns added 15 kills, and Marlee Sivak chipped in with 13. Lilly Wagner dished out 49 of the team’s 60 assists in the match. Bays Keller and Anna Bjork led the team statistically on defense with 25 digs and six blocks, respectively.

The Dashers won their fourth State championship in their 11th State Tournament appearance. Oconomowoc finished runner-up in its sixth State experience.

Top-seeded Xavier (39-7) hoisted the gold trophy following a 25-21, 25-23, 15-25, 25-16 over second-seeded Sauk Prairie (47-4) in the Division 2 championship tilt.

The Hawks featured a balanced hitting attack with three players in double-figures in the kills category. Halle Vande Hey led the team with 15, and Madison Daley and Annika Kowalski added 14 and 10, respectively. Mariah Potter handed out a game-high 42 assists. The team compiled 46 kills for a .184 attack percentage in game. Belle Shea was active on the defensive end with a match-high 24 digs.

Anni Braund had a match-high 21 kills to lead the Eagles. Jozie Braund chipped in with 11 kills. Alexis Klemm and Jenna Pistono shared in the setting responsibilities to account for 38 assists leading to the team’s 41 kills and .188 attack percentage. Klemm dished out 23 assists, and Pistono had 15. Klemm also led the team with 15 digs.

It was the first State championship for Xavier, which has had two runner-up performances in their five tourney appearances. The Eagles advanced the championship match for the first time  and finished runner-up in their third State experience.

Howards Grove (37-4) became just the third program to win at least four State championships in succession and the first to do it in Division 3. The top-seeded Tigers swept second-seeded St. Croix Falls (35-5) 25-19, 25-20, 25-14 in the tournament final.

The Tigers were led by Saige Damrow with 15 kills on the offensive attack and 20 digs on the defensive end. Mallory Gozdziewski added 14 kills, and Layla Beaudoin and Ellie Schueler shared the setter duties, distributing 20 and 17 assists, respectively. The Tigers recorded a .283 hitting percentage while limiting the Saints to a .115 percentage for the match. Olivia Baierl chipped in on defense with 17 digs and three block assists.

Kesley Cooper was the only Saints’ player to record double-digits in kills with 15. Brianna McCurdy assisted on 28 of the Saints’ 34 kills in the match, and she also led the team in digs with 14.

Howards Grove won its sixth State championship in its seventh State Tournament appearance. St. Croix Falls finished runner-up in its second State experience.

Top-seeded McDonell Central Catholic (41-12) shook off a first-set loss to defeat third-seeded Monticello  (31-2) 22-25, 25-22, 25-15, 25-16 to win the Division 4 championship for the second year in a row.

The Macks were led on the offensive attack by Marley Hughes and Gracie Goettl, who collected 15 and 13 kills, respectively. Abby Bresina dished out a team-high 32 assists to go with a game-high seven service aces, which ties for second-most recorded in a Division 4 State Tournament game. Goettl and Emily Cooper recorded 19 digs, and Marley Hughes was credited with having contributed on six blocks to lead the defense, which held the Ponies to a .153 hitting percentage for the match.

Ellie Gustafson paced the Ponies’ hitting attack with a match-high 28 kills. Macey Grant also contributed double figures in kills with 10. Kelcy Grant led all setters in assists with 37. Defensively, Gustafson had a game-high 25 digs.

The Macks won their third State championship in the program’s history, which comes in their fifth experience in the State Tournament. Monticello finished runner-up in its second State appearance.

Fourth-seeded Catholic Memorial (33-10) won the State Boys Volleyball Tournament championship with a 25-17, 25-23, 25-17 sweep of second-seeded Arrowhead (34-10) in the final.

The Crusaders’ stifling defense was the catalyst in the victory. They held the Warhawks to a .073 hitting percentage in the game with 36 digs, seven blocks and numerous deflections. Brady Oberfoell recorded a match-high 12 digs in the game, and Greg Bodus assisted in five blocks to lead the team defensively. Vinny Coello led all attackers with 11 kills in the match, and Ryan Brown delivered four service aces. Brown and Tim Serb shared the setting tasks, dishing out 16 and 11 assists, respectively.

Bennet Adams was the hitting leader for Arrowhead with nine kills, and Logan Bularz led the team in assists with 10. Defensively, Adams and Nikko Javier picked up six digs apiece.

The Crusaders won their fourth State title in 15 appearances in the tournament. The Warhawks finished runner-up for the second time in their nine State Tournament experiences.
