Yang Wins Alternate Season Singles Title; Paape & Roth Earn Doubles Crown

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. – The alternate season State Girls Individual Tennis Tournament produced a singles and doubles champion in one division Friday at Lake Geneva Tennis Club and Badger High School.

Fourth-seeded Annalise Yang, a freshman from Madison La Follette, earned the singles title with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over second-seeded Lily Olson, also a freshman, of crosstown-rival Madison Memorial in the championship match. Yang has compiled a 10-1 record this season, and Olson lost for the first time this season to possess an 8-1 mark.

Yang advanced to the championship match by defeating junior Ava Dunsirn of Neenah, the top seed in the bracket, 2-6, 6-3(5). Dunsirn went on to finish third in the tournament, and freshman Olivia Minikel of Manitowoc Lincoln placed fourth. Freshman Netra Somasundaram of Middleton won the fifth-place match, and sophomore Sophia Fergus of De Pere placed sixth.

The second-seeded tandem of junior Sophia Paape and sophomore Shelby Roth of Neenah won the alternate season doubles championship with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over the fourth-seeded duo of seniors Tristyn Lueck and Audrey Oschsner of De Pere. Paape and Roth improved their record to 15-1 this season after Roth advanced to the second round with a different partner in 2019. Lueck and Oschsner fell to 15-3 this season after qualifying in 2019 and falling in their first-round match.

The third-seeded team of seniors Karsen Dettman and Noor Rajpal of Middleton placed third, winning their third-place match against senior Jessica Jiang and freshman Sophia Jiang of Madison Memorial. The top-seeded tandem of senior Grace Welhouse and freshman Alex Madjun finished fifth, and seniors Elsie Steimle and Kendra Peterson of Manitowoc Lincoln placed sixth.

The alternate season State Girls Tennis Team Tournament is scheduled next Saturday, May 1 at the Menard Tennis Center in Eau Claire, Wis.
