Singles, Doubles Champions Crowned; Deang Wins Second Title

A pair of singles and doubles teams in two divisions were crowned champions of the 2020 State Girls Individual Tennis Tournaments Saturday. The Division 1 tournament was held at the Lake Geneva Tennis Club, and the Division 2 meet was hosted at the Sports Core in Kohler.

Top-seeded Baluck Deang of Edgewood won the Division 2 singles title for the second year in a row, defeating second-seeded Erika Curtin of Xavier 6-3, 7-5 in the championship match.

Deang improved her record to 13-1 this season. The four-time State Tournament qualifier placed fourth in 2018 and advanced to the third round as a freshman in 2017. The two titles won by Deang represents the two singles championships won by Edgewood.

Curtin suffered defeat for the first time this season to run her record to 14-1. She is also a four-time qualifier. Curtin transitioned back to singles play this year after capturing the doubles championship last season. She advanced to the third round of singles in 2018 and placed fourth in doubles in 2017.

The top-seeded tandem of Kala Siddalingaiah and Rebecca Daskal of the University School of Milwaukee won the Division 2 doubles championship with a 7-5, 7-5 victory over seventh-seeded Kylie McCormick and Bella Taleon of Xavier.

The tandem improved to 19-2 this season after qualifying the past two seasons and advancing to the  second round in each of the two previous experiences. The championship marks the fifth time a University School of Milwaukee doubles team has won the title.

Second-seeded Elizabeth Sobieski of Muskego outlasted top-seeded Autumn Bruno of Whitnall to win the Division 1 singles crown by scores of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the final. The three-time State qualifier improved her record to 25-1 this season after advancing to the quarterfinals last season and falling in her first-round match as a freshman in 2018. Sobieski becomes the first player from Muskego to win a State singles title.

Bruno, a four-time State qualifier, dropped her only match of the season in the final, finishing this season at 22-1. Her previous experiences resulted in a sixth-place finish last year, advancement to the quarterfinals in 2018, and a fourth-place finish in 2017.

In Division 1 doubles play, Halle Rosentreter and Gwen Hammond of Wilmot captured gold as the #8 seed in the tournament. They downed third-seeded Hannah Cady and Anna Long of Arrowhead 7-5, 6-1 in the final. The duo improved to 12-2 for the season and became the first girls tennis State champions in the program’s history.

With the runner-up finish, both Cady and Long improved on their standing from last season, gaining experience at State with different partners. Cady placed sixth, and Long advanced to the third round.

The State Girls Tennis Team Tournaments are scheduled next Saturday, Oct. 24. The Division 1 tournament will be held at the Lake Geneva Tennis Club, and the Division 2 meet will take place at the Sports Core in Kohler.
