Middleton Wins Division 1 Girls Swimming & Diving Championship

Middleton won its first Girls State Swimming and Diving team championship by capturing the Division 1 crown Saturday at the UW Natatorium in Madison.

The Cardinals compiled 265 points to dethrone two-time champion Arrowhead, which placed third 
with 180 points. Verona/Mount Horeb was runner-up with 215.5 points.

Middleton earned the championship on the strength of team depth. Freshman Gabriela Pierobon Mays of Middleton won gold in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.00. She also was a member of the winning 400 freestyle relay, teaming up with Hannah Aegerter, Caroline Hippen and Cora Mack to post a time of 3:24.94. Mack, Hippen and Aegerter also swam to glory with teammate Makenna Licking in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:33.72. 

Lillie Hosack of Cedarburg was also a two-time champion in the meet. She swam to the title in the 200 individual medley in a State Meet record time of 1:59.47. Teammate Skylar Fore was also crowned twice. She was clocked at 50.77 in winning the 100 freestyle. Hosack and Fore were also a member of the winning 400 medley relay with Erika Remington and Maya Novack. They finished with a time of 1:43.44.

Gwen Gustafson of Brookfield Central sprinted to the title in the 50 freestyle with a time of  23.31 after finishing fifth a year ago, and Abby Cabush of Arrowhead won the 200 freestyle in 1:50.77 after a runner-up finish last season. 

Rachel Powers won the 500 freestyle with a time 4:56.19 after finishing third in the event last year, and Katrina Marty of Madison West improved on last season’s ninth-place finish to capture the championship in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.31. Grace Bennin of Verona/Mount Horeb was the champion in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:02.13 

A freshman, Av Osero of Neenah, won the diving competition with a score of 508.65. Last year’s champion Tatum Thompkins of Racine Case finished fifth with a score of 457.35.
