Edgewood Cruises to Another State Girls Swimming & Diving Title in Div. 2

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Edgewood won the Division 2 team title for the eighth year in a row at the 2022 State Division 2 Girls Swimming & Diving Championships at the Waukesha South High School Natatorium Friday.

The Crusaders cruised to the title with 350 points and were crowned champions in six of the 12 events in the meet. Whitefish Bay finished a distant second with 167 points, and Ashwaubenon placed third with 166 points.

Izzy Enz of Edgewood won a meet-high four events, including two individual events and as a member of two relays. She broke the Division 2 record she set last season in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:47.64. It’s her third straight title in the event after she earned the silver medal with a runner-up finish in 2019. Enz also won her third consecutive title in the 500 freestyle, winning the gold this year in a time of 4:49.97. Enz’s teammate Brynn Stacey was the winner in the 100 freestyle, posting a time of 49.83.

The Crusaders swept the three relay events. Enz and Stacey were members of the winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays. They teamed with Sophie Reed and Katie McClure to win the 200 freestyle relay for the eighth consecutive year with a Division 2 record time of 1:34.05. Enz and Stacey joined Izzy Bloom and Sylvia Thompson to win the 400 freestyle relay for the seventh straight year with a time of 3:26.55. The quartet of Bloom, McClure, Thompson and Sophie Reed swam to the Crusaders’ second straight title in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:46.59.

Grafton celebrates a pair of champions. Libby Michel, a four-time qualifier in the 200 individual medley, won the event in a time of 2:04.00 following an eighth-place finish last year, a fifth-place result in 2020 and a 10th-place standing in 2019. Maranda Uttke was the champion in the diving competition after medaling the last three season. She compiled a score of 431.80 after placing third the past two seasons and sixth in 2019.

Lucy Art of Brown Deer/University School of Milwaukee won the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.37, improving on an eighth-place finish two years ago. In the 100 butterfly, Jordyn Davis of Jefferson/Cambridge captured the gold medal with a time of 57.35 after placing 12th a year ago.

Amber Winter of Merrill raced to the title in the 100 breaststroke, touching the wall in a time of 1:04.45 after she placed third last season. Anna Balfanz was the champion in the 100 backstroke, finishing the event in a time of 56.23 after a fifth-place performance in 2021.

The State Girls Swimming & Diving Championships continue Saturday with the Division 1 competition. The preliminary round in diving begins at 9:30 a.m. with swimming events to begin at 2:30 p.m.
