Edgewood, Verona Win Girls Golf Team Titles

Despite inclement weather that included rain, wind and cool temperatures, teams and individuals completed the scheduled 36 holes of the State Girls Golf Tournament, including 18 holes Tuesday, at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis.

Edgewood swept the honors in Division 2. The Crusaders won their fourth straight team championship and their 13th overall with a four-player total of 659. Tess Hackworthy was the individual medalist for the Crusaders with a 6-over-par score of 150. Her teammate­--defending champion Caroline Lake--finished second with a score of 154.

Fox Valley Lutheran finished second in the team competition 56 strokes behind Edgewood at 715. Spooner was third at 752. Sarah Busey of Racine St. Catherine’s finished third with a 13-over-par score of 157, and Stanley Wang of St. Thomas More placed fourth with a 163.

Verona won its first girls golf team championship, capturing the Division 1 crown with a score of 648, which was eight strokes fewer than 2013 champion Arrowhead with 656. Middleton finished third with a score of 670, and Homestead was fourth at 681.

Lauren Skibba of Middleton led the Division 1 individual competition from start-to-finish to earn medalist honors with a 3-over-par 147. It was Middleton’s first girl individual champion since Lindsey Solberg in 2006. Anika Hitt of Homestead finished four strokes back at 7-over-par, and Allison Chomniak of Arrowhead was third, shooting a 152, and Grace Dunn of Brookfield Central finished fourth with a score of 153. Two-time defending champion Jessica Reinecke of Verona placed fifth, eight strokes behind at +11.
