State Cross Country Champions Crowned

Crystal clear skies and crisp temperatures was the setting for the 2014 State Cross Country Meet at The Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., Saturday.

The start of the races were delayed one hour because of frost on the course after temperatures dipping into the teens in central Wisconsin overnight.

In the boys Division 1 race, Olin Hacker successfully defended his individual title by completing the 5,000-meter course with time of 14:59.10 and helping Madison West to the team title. The Regents scored 77 points, well ahead of defending champion Stevens Point, who finished runner-up with 157 points. Ryan Nameth of Verona finished second for the second straight season, finishing with a time of 15:35.02.

Eau Claire Memorial won the Division 1 girls team championship with 118 points, nine fewer than runner-up Stevens Point with 127. Annie Frisbie of River Falls captured the individual crown with a 5,000-meter time over 17:59.14 after placing 24th a year ago. Eau Claire Memorial’s Aubrey Roberts placed second with a time of 18:13.51.

Wisconsin Lutheran won its second consecutive team title and its third in the last four seasons with a five-runner total of 33. That point total represents the lowest winning point total since 1988 when Albany won the Class C championship with 32 points. Ben Eidenschink of Nekoosa/Port Edwards won the individual medalist honors with a time of 15:42 after placing sixth in 2013. Kyler Lueck of Wisconsin Lutheran was second with a time of 15:50.43.

Notre Dame was the girls champion in Division 2 with 91 points, eight fewer than runner-up McFarland with 99 points. Amy Davis of Edgewood cruised to the individual title with a time of 17:46.23. 
Defending champion Morgan Florsheim of Shorewood was runner-up with a time of 18:18.78.

Darlington won its fourth consecutive title in Division 3 and its sixth overall. The Redbirds tallied 54 points. Chequamegon was second based on the tie-breaker with Albany. Both teams finished with 90 points, but Chequamegon’s sixth runner placed ahead of Albany’s. Kevin Koski of Chequamegon was the individual champion after placing 10th a year ago, finishing with a time of 16;06.72. Dakota Kauffman of Boscobel was second at 16:18.47.

Lourdes Academy won its second straight team championship in Division 3 with a score of 68, well in front of runner-up Westby that scored 90. Delaney Greene-Gretzinger of Marion was the individual champion, covering the course landscape with a time of 19:05.43. Jennifer Lichter of Aquinas placed second with at time of 19:11.76.
