LAST YEAR:  Marquette won its second straight Division 1 championship with a 6-0 blanking of Kettle Moraine in the title game. In Division 2, Mount Horeb turned back defending champion Catholic Memorial to win the title with a 1-0 victory, and The Prairie School was crowned the Division 3 champion for the second consecutive season following a 5-2 win over Winnebago Lutheran in the championship game.

THE DIVISION 1 FIELD:  Two-time defending champion Marquette qualifies for State for the 13th straight year, which is also its overall number of appearances. The Hilltoppers have won eight of the last 12 championships, winning four consecutive crowns from 2000-03 and adding titles in 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2011. In addition, they finished runner-up in 2004 and 2007. They qualified by virtue of their 2-0 win over Pius XI in the sectional final the Hilltoppers hosted. Last year’s runner-up Kettle Moraine will be returning to State for the third time. The Lasers first experience in the tournament resulted in a loss in the 2007 quarterfinals. They advance into the final field of eight via a 3-2 shootout following a 1-1 tie with Muskego in the sectional final held at Muskego. Brookfield East is making its third straight appearance and its 16th overall, which ties Neenah for the most of any member. The Spartans won State titles in 1995 and 1997 and finished runner-up seven times (1982, 1987, 1989, 1993, 1999, 2003 and 2006). They tied Whitefish Bay 2-2 in the final of the Brookfield Central Sectional and advance to the State quarterfinals with a 4-2 shootout. Neenah is making its second straight appearance and its 16th overall, sharing the distinction with Brookfield East of having qualified the most of any school. The Rockets won back-to-back titles in 1985 and 1986, and added another in 2007. They placed runner-up in 1983 and 1991. They advance to State following a 4-1 triumph over Appleton North in the final of the Neenah Sectional. Eau Claire Memorial returns to the State Tournament for the fourth time in the last five seasons and for the eighth time overall. The Old Abes best outcome in the tournament came with a runner-up finish in 2002. They tied Hudson 0-0 in the Chippewa Falls Sectional final and advanced to State via a 5-4 shootout. Oregon makes its fifth appearance in the State Tournament and its first since 1998 when the Panthers captured the Division 2 crown. They blanked Madison Memorial 1-0 in the final of the Waunakee Sectional final to earn the opportunity for another shot at a title. Kenosha Bradford will also be making its third appearance and the second in the last three years. The Red Devils’ other experience at State came in 1982. They have fallen in the quarterfinals in both of the previous appearances. Their return to the tournament comes following their 2-0 shutout over Kenosha Tremper in the sectional final hosted by Racine Horlick.  Kimberly qualifies for the State Tournament for the first time since its only other appearance in 1983 when the Papermakers lost in the quarterfinal round. They return 29 years after their last appearance by virtue of a 2-1 victory of Green Bay Preble in the Kaukauna Sectional final.

THE DIVISION 2 FIELD:  Defending champion Mount Horeb will make its third State Tournament appearance after experiencing it for the first time in 2010. The Vikings earned the opportunity to retain their title by ousting Evansville 1-0 in the sectional final played in Mount Horeb. Notre Dame is making its first appearance since winning the second of back-to back titles in 2008. The Tritons qualify for the  sixth time overall. In addition to those consecutive championships, they also won the crown in 2001 and finished runner-up in their first-ever appearance in 2000. This year, they advance out of the Plymouth Sectional with a 1-0 win over Sheboygan Falls in the final. Xavier qualifies for the fifth time and for the first since four consecutive appearances from 2003-06. That run produced three State championships including back-to-back titles in 2003 and 2004. The Hawks added a championship in 2006. This year, they advance from the Stevens Point Sectional with a 1-0 win over Amery in the final. Pewaukee returns to State for the second time. The Pirates only other appearance came in 2008 when they fell in the semifinals. They advance this year via a 4-2 shootout in a 0-0 tie with Shorewood.

THE DIVISION 3 FIELD:  Last year’s runner-up Winnebago Lutheran qualifies for the State Tournament for the fourth time overall, all coming since 2005. The Vikings finished runner-up in their first-ever appearance in 2005. They defeated Green Bay N.E.W. Lutheran 2-1 in the sectional final hosted by the Vikings. Aquinas will make their third appearance in the State Tournament. The Blugold’s only two experiences resulted in runner-up finishes in 2002 and 2010. They are the champions of the Stevens Point Sectional by virtue of their 2-0 win over McDonell/Regis in the final. It is the second time Oostburg qualifies for State. The only other appearance resulted in a Division 2 State championship back in 1994. Their quest for another title remains alive following a 6-0 win over Central Wisconsin Christian in the sectional final played at Central Wisconsin Christian. St. Anthony makes its initial appearance at State, earning the trip with a 1-0 win over sectional final host University School.
