Marquette Wins Ninth Soccer Title

 State Tournament Results

The 2012 State Boys Soccer Tournament concluded with the crowning of three State champions at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee Saturday.

Marquette claimed its third straight Division 1 championship by edging Kettle Moraine 2-1 in the tournament final. Kettle Moraine scored first with a goal in the first minute of play, but the Hilltoppers tied the score at 1-1 with a tally before intermission. A goal by Jacob Grindel midway through the second half proved to be the game winner. It was the Hilltopper’s ninth State title, which leads all member school. All nine championships have come since 2000.

Xavier won the Division 2 crown with a 3-0 shutout over defending champion Mount Horeb in the final. A goal by Cesar Martinez in the second minute of the game was all the scoring the Hawks would need. They added a pair of insurance goals in the second half to account for the scoring.

St. Anthony won its first State title in any sport with a 4-1 win over Winnebago Lutheran in the Division 3 title game. Eduardo Gutierrez and Juan Serna each netted a pair of goals to lead the Roman Legion offense. It was the second straight season Winnebago Lutheran has finished runner-up in the State.
