DIVISION 1
Marquette University HS 4, Menomonee Falls 1
Marquette won the Division 1 championship with a 4-1 win over Menomonee Falls, giving the Hilltoppers their membership-leading 10th State title.
Ted Beiser got Marquette on the scoreboard first at 1:02 with an assist from Nick Leas. After a corner kick by Daizhon Nelson, Beiser got his second goal of the game in the 25th minute with the assist coming from Danny Lenz.
It didn’t take Menomonee Falls long to answer with their first goal of the game, coming in the 27th minute as Jake Lucht scored on his second goal of the season.
The Hilltoppers made it 3-1 with an unassisted goal from Michael Russell at 29:43. The Hilltoppers (23-1-2) outshot the Indians in the first half, 15-5.
Marquette capped the scoring to take a three-goal lead in the 58th minute on a score by Alec Philippe, his 27th goal of the season.
The Hilltoppers outshot the Indians 25-5 in the game. Quinten Ludwig made one save in goal for Marquette 1 and Will Genthe made seven stops for Menomonee Falls. This was Hilltoppers’ 14th trip to State and the first for Menomonee Falls
DIVISION 2
Brookfield East 2, Cedarburg 0
Brookfield East captured the Division 2 championship with a 2-0 blanking of Cedarburg in the championship game. It's the third title in the program's history, and it's the second straight season the Bulldogs have finished runner-up
The first half ended with the Brookfield East outshooting Cedarburg 8-2, but none of those shots entering the goal. The Spartan's Peter Raymonds was credited with the first goal of the game at the 58th minute.
Raymonds would get his second goal of the game in the 76th minute of the second half to increase the Spartans lead to 2-0. It was his 31st goal of the season.
Goalie Drew Johnson of Brookfield East had three saves, and Nat Esten of Cedarburg also had three saves. It was Brookfield East’s membership-leading 17th trip to State. They also won the gold ball in 1995 and 1997. This was Cedarburg’s 10th trip to State.
DIVISION 3
Delavan-Darien 3, Mount Horeb 1
Delavan-Darien won the Division 3 crown with a 3-1 victory over Mount Horeb in the Division 3 title tilt.
The Comets scored first at 21:27 on a goal by Juan J. Rocha that sailed across the box to the far post. It was Rocha’s 50th goal of the season.
Less then three minutes after their first goal, the Comets' Tigrio Huerta scored in the 23rd minute on a flying header to the back of the net. Saul Rivera was credited with the assist.
At 33:03, the Comets take a commanding three-goal lead after Jose Lemus scores from 5-yards out with an assist going to Jason Cano.
Nate Klopotic got theVikings on the board with his second goal of the season in the 44th minute. The goal was assisted by Jacob Babiuk.
The Comets out-shot the Vikings in the second half 7-5 and 16-9 for the game. Saves for Jimmy Conway had five saves fro the Vikings, and Juan L. Rocha had two for the Comets.
This is the second title for the Delavan-Darien in seven trips to State with their first championship coming in 2000.
DIVISION 4
The Prairie School 2, St. Thomas More 0
Championship Saturday started with the Division 4 matchup between The Prairie School and St. Thomas More. The Hawks won the State title with a 2-0 shutout over the Cavaliers.
After 39 minutes of play, the first goal of the game was credited to the Hawks' Bobby Gaertig on a long ball into the box at 39:33. Brett Bocciardi received the assist.
Gaertig scored his second goal of the game on a cross to the far post early in the second half at 48:31.
Trey Eckert had seven saves for The Prairie School, and Augie Tomski had one for St. Thomas More. This was The Prairie School's seventh trip to State and their fifth championship title.
Friday Semifinals
The wind impacted strategy and play in the 2014 State Boys Soccer Tournament at Time Warner Cable Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park Friday.
DIVISION 1
Menomonee Falls 5, Beloit Memorial 5 (Menomonee Falls advances 3-2 SO)
Menomonee Falls rallied from the 3-0 deficit in the second half and advanced to the Division 1 finals Saturday by virtue of a 3-2 advantage in a shootout after a 5-5 tie with Beloit Memorial.
It was all Beloit Memorial in the first half. Jose Barron scored the first goal of the game, his 31st of the season, to give the Purple Knights a 1-0 lead at 10:22. At the 32:40 mark of the first half, Ricardo Ramos scored with an assist from Barron to give the Purple Knights a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
Ramos netted his second goal of the game to extend the Beloit Memorial lead to 3-0 halfway through the second half. That's when the Indians' scoring frenzy began. Brandon Dantone scored his first goal with an assist from Kay Olapo at 69:36 into the game. Olapo cut the Indians deficit to one with a goal at 74.12 on an assist from Alex Eastman.
Beloit regained a two-goal advantage at 4-2 on a header goal from Andres Delatorre off a pass from Alberto Martinez at the 80:24 mark.
Dantone scored again at 84:14 with another assist from Eastman, and Dantone scored again on an unassisted goal two minutes later to tie the game at 4-4 and send the game into overtime. Dantone tied a State Tournament record with his fourth goal of the game two minutes into the first overtime period to give the Indians a 5-4 lead. That lead would last all of 36 seconds as Purple Knights quickly answered with an unassisted goal from Alberto Martinez.
With no scoring in the second overtime period, Menomonee Falls made its first three kicks of the shootout and held the advantage through five shootout shots to advance to the finals.
Will Genthe recorded three saves for the Indians in goal, and Luis Pedroza stopped four shots for the Purple Knights. This is the first trip to State for both Menomonee Falls and Beloit Memorial.
Marquette 3, Eau Claire Memorial 1
Marquette advanced to the championship final Saturday with a 3-1 win over Eau Claire Memorial in their Division 1 semifinal Friday evening.
Marquette (22-1-2) scored first at 5:20 with a goal from Alex Philippe with an assist from Ted Beiser. Eau Claire Memorial (21-5) responded to tie the score at 1-1 at 20:40 with a header goal from Marcus Wollak off an assist from Andy Frank.
At 29:25, the Hilltoppers were credited with Old Abes' own goal possessed a 2-1 at the half. Marquette’s final goal came on a penalty kick from Samson D’Amato at the 80-minute mark of the second half.
Jack Knowlton had six saves in goal for the Old Abes, and Quinten Ludwig made one stop for the Hilltoppers. Marquette 1. The HIlltoppers outshot the Old Abes 15-7, including a 9-1 advantage in the second half.
Marquette plays for its 10th championship in its 13 trips to State with its most recent title coming in 2012. Eau Claire Memorial is ousted from its ninth appearance in the State Tournament.
DIVISION 2
Cedarburg 1, Oregon 0
The wind impacted strategy and play in the 2014 State Boys Soccer Tournament at Time Warner Cable Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park Friday.
Last year’s runner-up Cedarburg (14-5-4) will play for the Divison 2 title versus Brookfield East Saturday at 3 p.m. following the Bulldogs’ 1-0 win over defending champion Oregon.
In a rematch of last year’s championship tilt ended in a 0-0 tie and decided by a shootout, this match-up appeared to be headed for the same destiny. Oregon failed to take advantage of wind in the first half despite an 11-3 advantage in shots, but Cedarburg scored at the 70:50 mark of the second half on a rebound kick directly in front of the goal by Ben Hengst with an assist from Sam Kronetzke.
The Bulldogs held the Panthers (17-2-2) scoreless the rest of the way to preserve the shutout. Nat Esten made nine saves in goal for Cedarburg, and Dan Dombrowski made four saves for Oregon. The Panthers had a 15-13 advantage in shots, but only managed four shots into the wind in the second half. Five different Panthers recorded a pair of shots, and Nick Steidemann led Oregon with six shots.
The Bulldogs are in pursuit of their fourth State championship, having won titles in 1989, 1991 and 1996. Oregon’s season ends with the Panthers’ seventh appearance in the State Tournament.
Brookfield East 4, Pulaski 0
Brookfield East (19-2-4) used winds that gusted up to 30 mph in the second half to score three goals and go on to defeat Pulaski 4-0 in the first Division 2 semifinal. Despite working against the wind in the first half, the Spartans outshot the Red Raiders 10-1 and scored their first goal on an unassisted shot from 20 yards out by Peter Reynolds.
The Spartans took full advantage of Mother Nature in the second half, scoring a pair of goals within a couple minutes span in the first three minutes of the half. Austin Toy accounted for both those goals. The first was a header off a cross from Winston Markusse at 45:27. The second was a short shot also assisted by Markusse at 47:37.
Henry Raymonds added an unassisted goal for the final score of the game at 63:49 with a kick six feet in front of the goal.
The Spartans outshot the Red Raiders 20-0 in the second half for a 30-1 game advantage. Jordan Dietrich made seven save for Pulaski, and Drew Johnson had the only save of the game for the Spartans. Joey Hoff came in to play the final 16:27 for Brookfield East without any action at the net.
Brookfield East has qualified for the finals for the 10th in the membership-leading 17th appearance. The Spartans’ two championships came in 1995 and 1997. The Red Raiders (14-4-5) are eliminated from their first State Tournament appearance.
Thursday Semifinals
DIVISION 3
The first day of the 2014 State Boys Tournament concluded with Mount Horeb and Delavan-Darien advancing to the Division 3 championship game Saturday.
Mount Horeb edged Luxemburg-Casco 1-0 in the second Division 3 semifinal at Time Warner Cable Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park Thursday evening.
The only score of the game came at 49:19 in the second half when Eric Crum found the back of the net on a shot that sailed over the goalkeeper from the top of the box.
Jimmy Conway made three stops for the Vikings, and Keegan Sewell saved five shots for the Spartans. Mount Horeb held a 15-7 shot advantage in the game. The Vikings return to the championship game for the third time in the last four years, having won the Division 2 title in 2011 and finishing runner-up in 2012.
Delavan-Darien (22-2-2) defeated Rice Lake 6-2 in Friday evening's first semifinal game. The Comets' Tigrio Huerta put his team on the board first with a goal at 6:41, assisted by Juan J. Rocha. The Warriors quickly answered with their first goal coming from Griffin Lorenz at 7:50.
Delavan-Darien’s next two goals are credited to Juan J. Rocha at 21:16 with an assist from Huerta, and Luis Villegas, who scored unassisted at 27:43. Rice Lake cut the deficit to 3-2 with just under two minutes remaining in the first half on an unassisted goal by Zach Buchli.
The Comets dominated play in the second half. Rocha netted his second goal of the game just over a minute into the second half with another assist from Huerta. Christian Gomez added a goal at 56:14 and Villegas added insurance by netting his second goal on Huerta's third assist at 66:17.
Goalie Joe Thurston recorded 14 saves for the Warriors (16-9-2) and Delavan-Darien goalie Juan L. Rocha was credited for one save.
DIVISION 4
The Prairie School advances to play St. Thomas More in the Division 4 championship game with a 6-0 victory over Sturgeon Bay in the second semifinal of the day at Time Warner Cable Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee Thursday.
The Hawks (19-4-3) scored early and often in the first half to take control of the game. They got on the board at 6:04 on the clock with a goal by Raul Rueda, assisted by Samual Chapman. Chapman provided another assist on Bobby Gaertig’s goal on a header off a corner kick at the 23:52 mark. Owen Veranth increased the Hawks’ lead to 3-0 with a goal assisted by Brett Bocciardi at 39:47 in the first half. Everett Eaton added a pair of unassisted goals before half to give The Prairie School a commanding 5-0 advantage at intermission.
The only scoring in the second half came on an unassisted goal by the Hawks’ Jack Gentile that curved inside the left post.
The Prairie School outshot the Clippers 12-7 in the game. Starting goalkeeper Trey Eckert made a save on the only shot on goal he encountered in the first half before giving way to Zach Owsley in the second half. Owsley recorded a three saves.
Caleb Owens made three saves for the Clippers in 79 minutes before Jose Reyes came in to finish the game without facing a shot on goal.
The Hawks advance to the final for the second straight season and for the seventh time overall, seeking the program’s fifth State championship. The Clippers (22-4-1) have fallen in the semifinals in each of its four State appearances, all of which have come since 2010.
In the first Division 4 semifinal, he Cavaliers advance to the title game in pursuit if their second State championship with a 3-0 win over Barron in the semifinals. They won the Division 3 title in 2006, which is their only other appearance in the State Tournament.
Diego Lopez gave the Cavaliers in early lead with a goal just 58 seconds into the game. Antonio Garcia assisted on the scoring play. Reyes Perez gave the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead later in the half with a goal at 41:44. Ben Kubiak was credited with an assist. Reyes added his second goal at the 67:59 mark in the second half with another assist from Garcia.
Goalkeeper Augie Tomski faced four shots and recorded four saves before being relieved in goal by Anthony Kotecki, who played the final 2:15 in goal for the Cavaliers. They out-shot the Bears 19-4 in the game, including 14-4 shots on goal advantage.
Quinn Hargis made 11 saves in goal for the Bears, who fall in the semifinals in their second straight State Tournament appearance.
