Besides participating in Key Club and National Honor Society, I volunteer with my church. My freshman and sophomore years of high school I participated in community service events with my church youth group, and now I still make an effort to help out from time to time even though youth group has ended.

Essay

My participation in cross country and track and field throughout high school has shaped me into a better runner and athlete, but it has also taught me many lifelong lessons and allowed me to develop important relationships. After chasing a state title in cross country for four years and settling for second place all too many times, I have realized that it takes commitment and dedication to get where you want to go. Through times of success and failure, I have found out that sometimes the training and time well spent with teammates is what is really memorable--wins and losses aside. I’ve learned that with good races come many bad ones, and sometimes the defeats are really what define champions. It can be hard to be motivated after heartbreaking races, but I think that after my most disappointing athletic performance is when I achieved the biggest gain. If anything, athletics have taught me that the most important thing is to never give up on yourself; this knowledge, along with the many close bonds I’ve formed with teammates and coaches, is ultimately the biggest “win” I could ever take away from my high school career.

Essay

At this point in my life, I think it is fair to say that athletic participation has greatly contributed to the athlete and individual I am today. At age four, I started gymnastics. There, I was taught the true importance of dedication and mental strength. Throughout my childhood, my teammates and I spent 20+ hours a week (52 weeks a year) in the gym, training our bodies and our minds to perform at maximum potential. My coaches taught me to hold myself to very high standards and to never settle with anything less than my best. In high school, this mentality carried over into my track and field career where I continued to grow both mentally and physically. Under a very keen coaching staff, I learned how to use my strengths to best benefit the success of my track and gymnastics teams. As I prepare to start my collegiate track and field career at Marquette University while studying nursing, I know that these skills and morals will guide me daily. My athletic career thus far has truly prepared me for the next step in my life. As a result of the attention to detail necessary in the sport of gymnastics, I hope to carry a high level of precision into my nursing studies. After spending many years working with a team of athletes, I have learned the importance of respectful collaboration: a skill used often amongst a team of nursing students and professionals. The attributes I have gained through athletics will forever be deeply rooted in my work ethic and will positively impact my future endeavors.

Essay

Participating in high school athletics has helped me grow as a person in so many ways. I could write ten pages on what I’ve learned, but in general it has taught me the values of teamwork, commitment, perseverance, and has helped me become a more confident individual and leader. Any sport demands time and commitment and all the other aspects that go along with striving to improve. However, what I have learned and value most from being involved in cross country and track is probably how it has helped me grow as a teammate and leader. Cross country and track might seem like they are more individual sports, but over the past four years I have come to appreciate just how important the team is. I played soccer until high school, but never really learned what being a team actually meant until I started running. Even though soccer seems like a very team oriented sport, my soccer teams never supported and pushed each other like my cross country team always has. Also, I learned the importance of leading by example very early on in cross country, and then becoming a captain later in my career helped me to grow into more of a vocal leader. Participating in high school athletics has helped teach me he values of leadership, teamwork, dedication, along with so much more, and these are all lessons I can bring with me into every other aspect of my life.

Essay

Athletic experiences have not only taught me key lessons on the court, but lessons I will carry with me into my college career and beyond. Through Cross Country, Basketball and Soccer I have realized that it is more than just teams battling for the first place prize, you are taught dedication, hard work and most of all teamwork. Being a three sport athlete I’ve had to carry a busy schedule with homework, practices and games. Fortunately this workload has taught me to work hard and stay focused in order to be successful and get the job done. I have also learned that success doesn't always come easy but is something one must strive and work towards. Taking on the heavy work load has challenged and taught me to manage my time in an effective way, as well as prepare me for the college level setting. Although dedication and hard work are important, I am most fortunate to be able to bring my knowledge of teamwork to those around me in future settings. Nothing compares to the feeling of working hard with your peers and pushing one another to be their very best and at the end celebrating a victory you all worked towards. I am extremely fortunate to have been involved in multiple sports that I have thoroughly enjoyed throughout my high school career. With being given the opportunity to play collegiate soccer at UW-Green Bay, I hope to share my knowledge I already have of dedication, hard work and teamwork with others. I am also looking forward to learning new skills, creating new relationships and playing the sport I love.

My participation in athletics has contributed greatly to my development. With sports, I have met many new people and created friendships with people that I never would have met if it wasn't for sports. The friends I have made through my athletic participation have become a second family to me. The sports I have played have not only taught me about the physical aspect of the game itself, but also the lessons and morals that you learn from it. All of the sports I've played contributed to my hardworking effort and has taught me many other things. I believe that the things I have learned through sports will have a big impact my future. The lessons I have learned will help me in college and in my future career.

Essay

Athletic participation has taught me perseverance and humility. As I grew up playing sports, I learned that there will always be ups and downs, and perseverance is key to accomplish goals I set for myself. Humility is key to accept losses and weakness while staying humble in success. I learned to work hard at whatever I choose to do. I know the lessons I learned through athletics will positively impact my future and my career; my experience in teamwork prepares me to support others in order to give them confidence, and hard work will lead to my own success while setting examples for those around me.

I am involved in 4-H, FFA, and Key club, which involves community work throughout the year. Some activities I am involved in 4-H are working with the garden that is in our fairgrounds, helping others when they need it, and simply helping in churches. However some FFA work may include, playing bingo with the elderly, spaghetti suppers, helping with other organizations, etc. Throughout these organizations, community work is a thing I have been involved in throughout my four years in high school.

Essay

Starting out as an athlete in the sixth grade throughout high school has really taught me work ethic and the drive to succeed. Having been to state all four of my years in cross-country and three years in track and field holding two team state championships in each sport along with two gold medals in track and field, just shows what I am really capable of. I wish more people got to experience that throughout their life. Growing up, I have always loved the sport of running, so as I got older running became more as a passion. There was nothing more than wanting to be part of a team with others wanting the same thing that I did. For example, cross-country is not an easy sport, not that any sport is easy, but this sport in particular is not easy because it takes more mentality than physical ability. I have found both of these sports have helped me become a leader and no matter how difficult practices and races may be, there will always be a pleasant outcome. My athletic participation has helped me grow as a person and to meet many people I may have never met if I were not out for athletics. Having excellent work ethic and the drive to succeed only boost my confidence and dedication toward my career goals and all aspects of life.

Essay

Through the participation of athletics, the development of my understanding of life has been genuinely more enlightened through experiencing both failure and success. Sports have showed me the good and the bad in reality with a perfectly balanced juxtaposition to each other. Every coach I have ever had has put emphasis on the responsibilities of dedicating yourself to a sport in context with real life. In real life you will have to be accountable to do your part and to not make up excuses when you fail. Which means that you will inevitably have to get over negative emotions such as frustration and defeat. Through sports I have learned to push through these emotions because I have learned that if they are confronted with hard work then they eventually will be balanced out with sincere pride and satisfaction. I know that in my future my responsibilities will only get harder. However, I have the confidence that long after my competing years are over, I will still be able to recall the personal rewards of perseverance if a reminder is ever needed. My past failures and successes will impact my future by keeping me desiring for that sincere satisfaction. Without sports I would have missed out on too many opportunities to both succeed and fail. Both opportunities have offered me prized lessons that have developed my core fundamental about life: Wherever there is adversity there is an accompanying component of reward awaiting whoever accepts its challenge.

Essay

By being involved in athletics all through high school, I have truly gotten to know more about myself as a person, teammate, and friend. My personality reflects the self-confidence, respect, and work-ethic I have developed through sports. I have been involved in cross country, basketball, and soccer all of my four years in high school. Each has taught me valuable lessons that will carry me through life, such as staying determined, never giving up, and focusing on what I can control. With each I have learned the importance of being a team player and being respectful to my team, coaches, opponents, and officials. Not only are the lessons learned from athletics valuable in competition, but also in all aspects of my life. In my future career, I aim to be a leader who is able to motivate others to do their best. I want to be seen as a team-player who is responsible and never gives up, especially in the face of adversity. Athletics have always been and will continue to be an important part of my life. The lessons I've learned from my coaches, teammates, officials, and competition will help me grow into a confident and successful.

Essay

My lifelong participation in athletics has allowed me to grow as an athlete by improving my skills, but also as a person by shaping my character in a variety of ways. Through countless miles run for cross country, thousands of shots taken for basketball, and many workouts endured for track, I have gained the ability to work hard, persevere, and dedicate myself to something I love, settling only for the best. Along with the hours of practice came success; sports have taught me to stay humble and to give credit to those who deserve it. More importantly, athletics give you a taste of failure, showing that winning isn't everything, and that you can learn from defeat and become better. My character was tested, trying to balance school and sports. Long nights and lots of homework gave me the capabilities to manage my time and focus on what really matters. One of the greatest aspects of being a student-athlete is forming unforgettable friendships with teammates and opponents, as sports teaches communication, social skills, and teamwork, all while sharing a passion for sport. As a team captain, leadership is one of the most valuable qualities I've have, from taking responsibility for my team's actions and my own, to guiding and motivating athletes to become the best they can be. I truly believe that my participation in sports has prepared me for my future, giving me the necessary tools to succeed in whatever I do.

Participating in athletics has shaped the way I have grown as a person. I have learned to be a team player. It is not always what is best for myself, but what is best for the team. Also, athletics has taught me to have a strong work ethic. To be the very best of your ability in the sport I compete in I have to work hard during the on and off season. This takes dedication, but I have received many awards for my hard work. I know that sports has already had an impact on my future. It has helped me select the college I will be attending next year. I will be going to Clarke University to play volleyball. Also, I can see myself coaching a young team in the future, and with my knowledge of sports this can give me an advantage. Athletics have shaped who I am as a person and the qualities it has taught me will stick with me for the rest of my life.

Playing volleyball and basketball has taught me how to be a team player and also take criticism from coaches. As a captain for two years in both sports, I have also learned how to be a leader. I try to lead by example and be a role model for younger players. Being in athletics has helped me make good choices to make sure I can participate in the sports I love. All of these skills will help me be successful in college and my career. At this time I am undecided on my major but I am thinking about the medical field. Most jobs require people skills and I have learned valuable people skills from my participation in athletics. From being a captain to being interviewed by the media, to just playing the game on a court in front of a crowd. As I continue my career at Butler University, I am hopeful that being a student athlete will help me make connections so that I can get a job when I finish college.

Athletic participation has contributed to my development in various ways and these will impact my future greatly. I have acquired important characteristics including: ambition, compassion, and optimism. A common goal for any individual or team is to win. In order to accomplish this, a person must be determined and hardworking. The ambition I have gained is used at home, in the classroom, and at job settings. My strong desire for success will help me push and challenge myself everyday to become better. I have also become a more compassionate individual. During practice, I notice teammates get down on themselves for mistakes, and I sympathize and build them up. I have learned the value of showing a caring heart to all people under any circumstance. When I show compassion, I become happier by helping, but I also see others become happier. This will allow me to surround myself with a lifetime of happiness. I have also developed an optimistic persona from my athletic career in which I view the glass as half full and not half empty. This positive outlook will help me build others and myself up to strive for success. During my lifetime, I will not dwell on the negatives, but rather learn from them and move on. My drive to work hard, care for others, and look on the bright side have been gained through my athletic participation and will continue to benefit my future.

These qualities have not only contributed to my development as an athlete, but also as a student. When it comes to both academics and athletics I have learned to give nothing but my all. One of the life lessons basketball has taught me is teamwork, which I have applied in the classroom when working on projects with other students. Participation in sports demands time management in order to balance homework with games or meets. In turn, I always get my homework done on time, and produce a high quality product. Other ways athletic participation has contributed to my development include leadership, mental toughness, a “be the best” mindset, and doing things outside of my comfort zone. The life skills I have learned through athletic participation will be useful throughout my life. The ability to manage my time effectively, produce quality work, and work with others will be beneficial in college, my career, and my personal life. In addition, I have formed lifelong friendships with my teammates as well as a habit of physical fitness that I will continue for the rest of my life. Participating in athletics has made me a better person today and will influence me long after I step off the course, court, or track.

Essay

I cannot imagine my life without being involved in athletics. Athletics have played such an important role in my development. They have taught me not only how to deal with the struggles that life throws at me, but how to overcome them. I had to make sacrifices in my life, such as time with friends and family. I had to make my coaches and teammates a priority in order to better our team and myself. Sports have also taught me to be mentally tough, and to never settle for anything less than the best. I learned to push myself as hard as I can all the time while ignoring the ever-present critics that go along with being an athlete. Through the tough practices and long nights, I have learned how to manage my time well - I excel in my academics, perform to the best of my abilities during practice and games, spend time with my family, and get an adequate amount of sleep at night. Because of athletic participation throughout my past four years of high school, I am well prepared to move on to the next chapter in my life. I am blessed to be able to continue to play basketball in college and I am confident my high school experience has prepared me for the challenges that lie ahead.

Essay

Participation in athletics has played a valuable role in my life. I have learned many key life lessons throughout my athletic career that will translate into my adult life. These life lessons include: the importance of leadership to a team, what it takes to be a good teammate and the attitude and drive necessary to be successful. These are lessons and skills that will help me as I move along into college and then further on to my career and life. I have learned from my experience, successful teams have strong leaders. There is a time and place for everyone to take a leadership role. If a team only has one leader then only that one person has ownership of the team. If there are many leaders, then that team has many owners and that team will be successful. Another thing I have learned in order to be successful is to be a good teammate. Being a good teammate is vital for my future, whether it be in my career or with my family. Having a positive attitude, being a good listener, and working together are characteristics that are needed both on and off the court. The drive to be the best has carried over from the court, to the classroom, to my friendships, and to my future. The drive that I have developed has taught me that the harder I work, the more I will get out of what I am doing.
