Essay

Running has impacted my life in the best way possible and has guided me through a journey of self-discovery. Before I started running, I had no idea who I was, what I was capable of, and what the future had in store for me. After participating in both cross-country and track for the past four years, I have finally found the answers to my questions thanks to something as simple as running. All I had to do was put one foot in front of the other and before long I discovered who I was as a person. Reflecting on the past four years, I have realized how much running has truly affected my life. In fact, I consider it more of a chosen lifestyle than just a sport. Running will continue to impact my life as I move on to compete at the Division 1 level for college athletics, where I know my limits will be tested. With races being all over the country next year I will need to learn to manage my time in order to make the most of myself, as both a student and an athlete. I am incredibly grateful for all of the opportunities I have been given and am excited to see what the future holds as I move on to competing at a higher level.

Essay

Athletic participation over the years has helped me grow and develop in a lot of different ways. As a student-athlete, I have become both respectful and responsible on and off the court and playing fields. I have learned different skills, moves, and plays, but I have also learned things that don’t necessarily take talent, things such as hard work, discipline, passion, and persistence. These are some of the more important things because they will stick with me and help me as I go through life. In addition, sports have also pushed me to teach and learn things about myself. Handling adversity, being confident and composed, and having a positive mindset are all things you have to create for yourself. Having these tools is important because I won’t always have other people to rely on and I will have to figure things out on my own. Another positive aspect of athletics is it has allowed me to develop lifelong relationships with teammates and coaches. This is important because I will always have people who will support and be there for me that I can turn to if I need anything. Furthermore, I believe that my participation in athletics has provided me with the skills and lessons that will positively impact my future. I will be capable of working hard and pushing myself further in order to achieve any goals that I set for myself and will be able to take head-on any obstacles and hardships that come my way.

Essay

I have spent countless hours, days, and yes even years working on sports. Some call it crazy, others worthless. These people don't understand the point of sports, and I don't expect them to any time soon. Being raised an athlete, I understand the dedication and hard work it takes to be both an athlete and a student. Morning runs, fighting to keep my eyes open, have shown me how to push myself if I want to make my dreams a reality. Countless hockey practices with deep, hot breaths and burning legs have taught me how to push through any physically and mentally painful situations I may ever be in. A small, rubber puck sits on my stick just waiting for me to make a decision as to where it should go. This puck has given me more self-confidence in myself and my decisions more than anyone could. In track, knowing that all that stands between my team and state is a great performance, has given me the ability to trust not only in myself but also others. It has taught me working together to achieve a similar goal is a lot easier than going it on your own. Who I am today is much attributed to sports; it is a debt that I can never repay.

Athletic participation has contributed to my development in several ways. I have learned how to work with other people collaboratively to meet goals. I have learned how to cooperate with many types of people and learned the skill of compromise. Playing sports has made me realize what true dedication is and how possessing this is important to accomplishing many things in life. I realize the importance of working hard to improve and reach goals. This can help because in the occupational world, one has to work hard in order to be successful. Dealing with success and failure was similarly vital because there will come a time in the future that things will not always go my way and I have learned (from sports) to look past that. Playing sports has taught me discipline. I understand how to divide up my time between school and extracurricular activities. Sports have also created many friendships. The friendships I have made in each sport are ones that will follow me throughout my life. Attitude is a characteristic that is also very important to learn at a young age. A positive attitude is everything. It can ultimately determine the outcome of situations. Most importantly, I learned that the only person that can beat me- is me. This leads me to have confidence, composure, and self-respect early in my life.

Essay

Participating in sports has allowed me to grow and develop in so many different and positive ways. I’ve learned many different lessons not only on the playing field, but off it as well. Lessons such as how to manage my time, how to be patient with others, and the ability to recognize/work with the talents different people bring to the table, have all been very helpful and important to my development as a young woman. Certain qualities I’ve been shown have been equally helpful as well. Qualities such as sportsmanship, loyalty, dedication, hard work, and teamwork have all been instilled in me since I was young. If I hadn’t been involved in as many sports as I have been throughout the years, I may not have picked up on these traits as easily and that would truly be a shame. Involvement in sports has also taught me how to deal with people as well as allowed me to form some of my most treasured friendships. By working together and putting the teams needs above your own, I have been able to realize how to best interact with people and this has lead me to some wonderful friendships as mentioned. I would be a completely different person without all the lessons I’ve been taught, qualities I’ve been shown, and friendships I’ve formed from sport related activities. Without these lessons, qualities, and friendships, that have come from involvement in sports, my future wouldn’t nearly be as stable as it is now.

Participating in high school sports has provided me with opportunities to grow not only in sports skills, but also in life skills. I try to be successful in everything I do: at home, in school, and in my community. Sports goals of maintaining a positive attitude, being a leader, encouraging others, and working hard have become my lifetime goals, contagious to everyone around me. Playing varsity volleyball, basketball, and softball has positively impacted my life. I have learned the value of preparation, supporting teammates, and setting goals. During practices, I have learned that if we want to be successful, our time needs to be taken seriously. "You play how you practice." This lesson does not just apply to sports, but to life's challenges, as well. Learning how to get along well with differing personalities, being supportive, and understanding the adversities others have to face has enabled me to be a friend, leader, and role model in and out of sports. On all of my teams, I have contributed responsible leadership, a positive attitude, determination to succeed, and high energy. I intend to put these characteristics to good use as I face my future. An important lesson I have learned about myself through sports involves character building. It is my desire not only to build strong character in myself but also to build positive attitudes and attributes in others. In the future, I can make a difference. Encouraging qualities such as kindness, respect, and integrity helps make a better world!

Throughout my years participating in athletics, I learned life lessons every time I stepped onto the field or court. Athletics have helped me develop many positive characteristics that I will continue to use for the rest of my life. I treasure the dedication athletics has inspired in me. My patience for working with teammates has grown immeasurably as I have gotten older, and I’ve truly grown in my respect toward coaches, players, and referees. Being a student-athlete has given me the chance to tackle more responsibilities than I ever could have imagined, and has given me the chance to meet many extraordinary people who have helped me in my journey. Every challenge I have faced on the court and field has given me the motivation to overcome any obstacle life may throw at me. As well as the life lessons I’ve learned in the past, I believe participating in athletics will help impact my future by giving me better understanding of how to work with others. The commitment I have put forth in the last four years and beyond will impact my life in the most positive manner possible--the tenacity and will to fight will always be engraved in the back of my mind no matter what endeavors I may aim to do. Being an athlete has been nothing but a positive experience--one that I will always treasure. I would not be who I am without the positivity and discipline athletics have instilled in me.

Essay

Through out my years of playing high school sports it has taught me many different lessons, has helped me set goals and become a better leader. Sports have set me up to continually be successful in my adult life because of all the hard work it has forced me to do. It has taught me that your actions speak louder than words and you always have to put the team before yourself. The right choice might not always be the most fun choice, but in the end you have to do what’s right because whether you know it or not everyone is looking to you to make the right decision. Sports will continue to impact my life ahead of me because it has taught me that if you put in the work, you can achieve whatever you want. It may not always be easy, but sports have showed me that as long as you don’t give up you will be successful in whatever you do.

When I began participating in athletic competitions in second grade, I could not have imagined the impact it would have on my life. Athletic participation has given me valuable skills that can be applied to all aspects of life. I have learned the value of teamwork from putting on a jersey and stepping onto a court or field with my teammates. I believe this skill is instrumental to being successful in the future because of the ability to work with others. Self-motivation has also been a skill I have continued to develop throughout the years. As a student-athlete, the discipline and self-reliance to get your work done is crucial. Wherever my future takes me, being accountable and self-motivated will greatly benefit me. Like many athletes my age, my dream was to become a division 1 athlete. Next fall, I am able to fulfill that dream. While I do not take this opportunity for granted and I am truly humbled by it, I realize my hard work has gotten me here. When I picked up a shot put at seven years old, no one could have predicted the opportunities it would bring. I plan on carrying the skills instilled in me from such a young age into my academics and track and field career at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I truly believe I am a better person because of my participation in athletics and will be forever grateful to the coaches who taught a young girl such valuable life lessons.

Athletic participation has played an integral role in my personal and academic development. Throughout my athletic career I have encountered passionate role models, inspiring educators, and dedicated athletes who have motivated me to never accept less than my best. From the moment I was selected as captain of my basketball team to crossing the finish line as a member of a State Championship Cross Country team, I realized athletics significantly contributed to my overall development and would also directly impact my future. My experience in school and athletics has provided me several leadership opportunities. I've accepted and embraced those challenges and viewed them as ways to learn and grow. I recognized how I could be a positive influence on other students by maintaining humility and exhibiting perseverance. Academics have always been my priority, but involvement in athletics taught me invaluable life lessons including self-discipline, teamwork, and time-management. My basketball career presented me with an unexpected event that offered me a new outlook on life. I was seriously injured and required two eye surgeries with no promise of fully regaining my vision. My perspective changed and I realized how blessed I am to even be able to participate in athletics. My teammates, friends, and family offered unwavering support and reminded me my purpose in life and potential were not solely based on my athletic abilities. I'm eternally grateful I was able to return to athletics and that I will continue to strive for excellence as a student athlete in college.

Cross-country has been my greatest passion and the sport to which I have devoted the greatest amount of time. Through training and competition it has taught me countless lessons. First, it has given me the opportunity to form friendships that will last beyond the season or graduation from Random Lake High School. It has also shown me the benefits of self-confidence, pride, hard work, discipline and determination. It has helped me to realize that I determine my own success or failure based on the effort I put into any situation. While personal triumph appears to be the main goal, the combined effects of the team are greater than the sum of our separate achievements. Most importantly, the fundamental core that athletics allowed me to intrinsically envelop, has become ingrained into my life, helping me to hold strong to personal convictions. If I can take all that cross-country has taught me, and carry it into my future, I will be empowered with the ability to achieve great success. The self-confidence will help me to obtain a Kinesiology degree. The pride and hard work will allow me to gain entrance into Physical Therapy graduate school. The discipline and determination will give me the strength to open my own synergistic practice. These personal, educational and career goals are not easily acquired but unquestionably obtainable.

There are many lessons, experiences and opportunities that would never be present in my life today if it wasn’t for sports. By participating in athletics, I have developed into a competitive, disciplined individual having the mentality to succeed in all different aspects of life. Athletics have taught me time management, self-discipline, and work ethic, lessons that will benefit my future. Experiencing a win or a loss can tell a lot about a person’s character, drive, and perseverance. A necessity to succeed in a sport is effort, and after a loss there is always room for more. Being an athlete has developed me into a driven, respectful and strong individual. Most importantly, sports have taught me the importance of being a team member. Working well with others is a characteristic that will empower me to do great things. My love for competition has made me a tough competitor, but my drive and determination to excel against others has enabled me to succeed. Throughout high school, sports have given me opportunities and a sense of achievement and overcoming obstacles. Throughout my sports career, I have come to realize that athletic participation is more than just playing in games. It teaches valuable lessons for a successful life. Athletic participation has done many things for me. It has taught me more than how to kick a soccer ball, shoot a lay up, or spike a volleyball. It has taught me life-long lessons. Athletic participation has helped me improve my leadership skills. It has taught me to never quit and to try my hardest at every moment. These skills that I have obtained through athletic participation will help prepare me for the rest of my life. Athletic participation has given me the opportunity to learn how to manage my environment and to adjust to the different circumstances around me. But the most important benefit has been learning how to cope with adversity, loss, and disappointment. Working toward responding to these hardships in a positive and productive way has given me the confidence to push through and aim toward the highest outcome. Athletic participation has been much more than just a game or a practice. It has helped and will continue to help shape who I am today and who I will be in the future.

Spring it On!

Essay

As my senior year is winding down, I can’t help look back at my years in high school. A lot has happened in four years but for me, my favorite memories were made on the court. However, I am taking away more than memories; the hours of grueling practices and competitive games instilled qualities that I will carry with me forever. I've learned dedication, strength, commitment, pride, willpower, and most importantly--leadership. These life skills have very useful to me in sports, but they have helped me through many situations in life, such as my academics. Being involved in athletics contributed immensely to the building of my character. In the future, I will be able to overcome any obstacle thrown my way. My mental strength developed from athletics is going to be very beneficial in times of struggle. Also, I have been apart of a team since I was in elementary so I know how to work very well with a team or group of people. This skill alone will take me a long way. Lastly, after the last basketball game of my career my coach pulled me aside and told me “if you work half as hard in life as you did on this basketball court, you will be very successful in life”. It was good reassurance because sometimes I forget the amount of effort I put into everything I do. Giving it my all has become mundane and I don’t foresee any change in the near future. High school athletics have been very enjoyable, but the transition from high school to college is soon to come, and I know I am ready.

Athletic participation has definitely contributed to my development. Through athletics I have learned character, time management, and teamwork. I am thankful for learning these traits and will carry them into my future. Character is the most important skill that I have learned through athletics. I want to be known and remembered as a humble, well-rounded student athlete. I have always self- governed myself to treat others like I want to be treated. If I see a teammate without a partner, I always volunteer myself. I have also never been derogatory towards my coaches or teammates. I have never considered myself to be better than my teammates. I see my entire team as equal, striving together to be the best. Time management really plays a large role in my daily life. In order for me to play the game, I have to get it done in the classroom first. I have had to juggle practice, games, and homework throughout my high school career. You cannot have a successful team without teamwork. Teamwork will be vital to my success beyond athletics and school. Teamwork is going to be very important for the future. I will need this skill in my future family, in the workforce, and in my community. All of the skills that I have learned through athletics have made me the person that I am today and will help guide the person that I want to be in the future.

Athletics have made me a stronger, more reliable person with good time management and continues to mold me into the person I hope to be in the future. I can’t take credit for the way I have been raised. Both of my parents coached me in athletics since 4th grade, and they have always taught me to be a respectful, hardworking leader that never gives up and always goes 100 percent. Those characteristics will stay with me forever, and help me throughout my future, no matter where it leads me. They were both amazing coaches, and because of that I have a chance to chase my dream of playing basketball in college. Time management has been one of the best contributions I have learned. Athletics plays a huge roll on how you spend your time and, although at times it was difficult, I was able to manage my time so everything was accomplished. Just that will help me immensely in my near and far future. Growing as a person means to become a better version of yourself throughout the years, and athletics has done just that for me. To get knocked down meant I just needed to get back up again and become stronger so I wouldn’t fall the second time. Playing with a young team just meant I had to become a confident leader and push them and myself. Without athletics, I can honestly say I don’t know if I would have gotten as far as I have.
