Both the Laconia and Omro school administrators should be very proud of their varsity baseball players and coaches for their display of positive sportsmanship during the contest. Jared Hoffman and Ethan Rens of Laconia and Rikken Frost of Omro were obvious leaders of their teams, especially in showing respect for opponents, as well as helping retrieve bats and foul balls near the plate. They offered a kind word to the umpires and were noticeably appreciative of their coaches and teamates. Best of luck the rest of the season to both teams!

Winter Team Sportsmanship Awards Selected

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, in cooperation with Rural Mutual Insurance, has chosen the recipients of the team sportsmanship awards for the 2019 winter State Tournaments.

A note of thanks to Activities Director Aaron Jenson and his crew at Waupaca High School. On my officiating partner Brent Thompson and I had the privilege of working the game. Aaron welcomed us and made us feel right at home while managing three other home events. Coach Mondelle and Coach Kramer thank you for leadership in modeling sportsmanship. Special thanks to Isaiah Ulman from FVL and Jack Menzies from Waupaca. These two athletes demonstrated leadership skills through their positive encouragement towards their teammates and hustle on and off the field. All in all it was a great day for spring sports.

I observed many acts of good sportsmanship, but this one stood out from all the others. Sam Nelson, a young lady from Webster High School, helped a young lady from Hayward High School up after she fell down at the end of a highly competitive 800-meter run. Sam displayed compassion and concern this young lady from Hayward. Sam is coached by Roy Ward. Congratulations!

The atmosphere was a fun in which to work. The two teams played hard with a great sense of sportsmanship. Each team battled hard but with respect for each other and the game. The fans were great for both teams. They cheered appropriately for their teams.

Op-Ed: Dear Mom and Dad: Cool it!

If you are the mother or father of a high school athlete here in Wisconsin, this message is primarily for you. When you attend an athletic event that involves your son or daughter, cheer to your heart’s content, enjoy the camaraderie that high school sports offer and have fun. But when it comes to verbally criticizing game officials or coaches, cool it.

Throughout the rivalry game it became more and more apparent we wouldn’t have any sportsmanship issues. It was apparent that both teams had respect for the game, officials, and opponents! I went out of my way after game to tell both coaches, as well as the Chetek athletic director that I was super impressed with the sportsmanship and respect of the players and coaches.

We were greeted by the athletic director at the door and taken to our room. The AD was friendly and always asking if there was anything we needed. During the game, the coaches, fans and players were fantastic. Coaches had questions, but they asked them in a respectful manner. Fans were cheering for their team. Players were playing hard as a team and were very friendly and receptive to the feedback we provided. Following the game, the AD was there and promptly took us to the locker room and thanked us for our time. It was truly a great game to officiate.
