Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln has also strung together five straight titles from 2003-07, as well as four straight from 2009-2012.  Four of Mineral Point's titles came in succession from 1980-83. Winning three times in a row were Milwaukee Washington (1940-42), Coleman (1962-64 and 2010-12), Stoughton (1975-77), East Troy (1986-88), Athens (1993-95), Luxemburg Casco (2001-03) and Mineral Point (2007-09).

Champions

There have been 50 different schools that have won State team championships. Wisconsin Rapids has the most titles with 21. Mineral Point has won 11 titles;  Luxemburg-Casco has 10; and Coleman has nine. Milwaukee South and Stoughton have won seven team titles, with Athens having won six times.

Most Team Titles

Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln has appeared in the State Team Tournament 17 times since its inception, the most of any member school. Lodi and Luxemburg-Casco has appeared in 14 team tournaments with Ellsworth having appeared 11 times. Kaukauna and Mineral Point are next in line with 10.

Team Tournament

Until 1991-92, team championships were decided on the basis of a point system for individuals finishing first, second, etc., at the State (Individual) Tournament. Beginning in 1991-92, the team champion was determined in a separate team tournament series involving dual meets among the regional champions. The first two such State Team Tournaments were held at UW-Stevens Point. In 1994, the team tournament moved to West Allis Central High School where it remained through 2004 when it then moved to the UW Field House in Madison in 2005.

Weight Class Changes:

Since 1940, there have been 38 different weight classes in WIAA wrestling history.  The 14 weight classes approved by the NFHS committee beginning in 2011-12 are as follows: 106 (pounds), 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 160, 170, 182, 195, 220 and 285.  Previously, the weight classes: 103, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215, 285.  In 1940, the weight classes were:  95, 105, 115, 125, 135, 145, 155, 165, 180, 200.  All weight classes in 1940 were the maximum and under.  The 200 pound division was only included in dual meets upon mutual agreement of the schools and no contestant was permitted to wrestle in any weight class above that in which he weighed in.  There was no weight allowance. Net weight was required in all meets.

Weight Classes

The wrestlers were provided a two pound weight growth allowance on December 25 and a one pound growth allowance on February 1.  So the 113 pound weight class is actually 116 pounds.  For each day of competition, a one pound allowance will be provided which means the wrestler must weigh in at 116 on Thursday, 117 on Friday, and 118 on Saturday,

Undefeated Wrestlers

In WIAA history, only three wrestlers have been undefeated during their entire high school wrestling career:  1) Matt Hanutke, Pittsville High school, Career Record: four time Division 3 State Champion 1987-90, Win/Loss:  117-0; 2) Kevin Black, River Falls High School, Career Record: four time Division 1 State Champion 1995-98, Win/Loss: 160-0; and 3) Jarod Donar, Cuba City High SChool, Career Record:  four time Division 2 State Champions 2009-12, Win/Loss: 189-0.

Championship Sites

The first wrestling tournament was held in 1940 at Appleton and was won by Milwaukee Washington.  The next year it was held at West Milwaukee before moving to Neenah in 1942.  Because of World War II, there were no state meets until 1947 when it was held at West Milwaukee.  Racine Park hosted in 1948.  In 1949, the meet was moved to UW Madison at the UW Fieldhouse through 1997. In 1998, the individual tournament moved to the Kohl Center.  2013 will mark the 70th Annual Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Individual Wrestling Championship Tournament.

Mineral Point (49) has the most WIAA Individual Wrestling State Champions.  Followed by:  Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln (42),  Milwaukee South (39), Luxemburg-Casco (32), Colemen (28), Milwaukee Washingont (21), Racine Park (20), and Richland Center (21).  All-time State Individual Champions (PDF)

Open, Classes, & Divisions

The tournament followed the open class format through the years until 1980 when team champions were determined by A-B-C classes. Individual champions continued being determined by an open class through 1980 and thereafter on a three-class basis. Classes were renamed divisions beginning in 1990.
