Four teams in Division 1 advanced to the semifinals of the WIAA State Girls Volleyball Tournament with victories Thursday at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis.
Defending champion Burlington (37-5), the fourth seed, downed Kimberly in five sets 14-25, 25-12, 26-24, 18-25, 15-9 in its quarterfinal. Coley Haggard led three hitters in double figures in kills with 16. Emily Allen added 15 kills, and Maddie Berezowitz chipped in with 10. Kaley Blake led the Demons in assists with 45, and Samantha Naber led the team on defense with 21 digs.
Kimberly was led offensively by Courtney Pearson and Maggie Cartwright with a match-high 20 kills apiece. Kalli Mau was credited with a match-high 47 assists and Pearson collected a game-high seven services aces and a game-high 28 digs.
The Papermaker finish their season with their 12th State appearance and a 33-11 record. The Demons advance to the semifinals Friday evening.
Waukesha West (35-10) upset top-seeded Arrowhead in their State semifinal match-up at Thursday evening at the Resch Center.
The Wolverines won the first two sets of the match and came back in the fourth to notch a 25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 29-27 win. Alexis Boling led the offensive attack with a team-high 21 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Kaylee Lorincz had 14 kills and Anna Nerad added 10. Darragh Dixon dished out a team-high 25 assists and McKenna Scharnek chipped in with 19, and Anna Holland had 17 digs on the defensive end.
Arrowhead was led by Aubrey Hamilton with game-high 24 kills, and Elise Schneider added 11. Jade Stefan and Emma Ruckstadter shared the setting duties, handing out 20 and 18 assists, respectively.
Emily Larson led three players in double-figures with 15 digs.
The Warhawks (45-7) end the season with their second State appearance, and Waukesha West advances to the semifinals in its first State appearance.
Last year’s runner-up and second-seeded River Falls (43-2) cruised to a 25-17, 25-14, 25-19 win over Greendale in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Emily Banitt and Anna Wolf posted 13 and 11 kills, respectively, to lead the Wildcats on the offensive attack. Maddie Morrow was credited with 33 assists to lead all setters. Banitt and Mariah Marg each had nine digs on defense to lead the team. The Wildcats were efficient on the offensive attack with a .438 hitting percentage.
The Panthers struggled on offense, hitting for a .082 percentage. Ruby Anderson and Kayce Litzau shared the team lead in kills with eight. Litzau also led the team in assists with 13. Sarah Mattes had a game-high three service aces, and Nicole Martin led the Panthers on defense with eight digs.
Greendale ends its season with its seventh State appearance and a 31-17 record. River Falls advances to the semifinals Friday evening.
Oconomowoc (30-7) advances to the semifinals for the third time in the last four season with a 25-16, 25-22, 20-25, 25-16 victory over Sun Prairie Thursday.
Maleah Howe led a balanced offensive attack with 13 kills, and Kaitlyn Bingham and Elle Shult each added nine kills for the Raccoons. Bingham also dished out a game-high 38 of the teams 50 assists in the game. On defense, Caitlin Crawford had 11 digs to lead the team, and Ashley Sharkus contributed with 10 while Shult was a force at the net with one solo block and five block assists.
KJ NcNabb and Payton Addink led the Cardinals on offense with 10 kills apiece, and Josie Halleib distributed 23 assists. Morgan Jansen led all players with 25 digs on defense.
Sun Prairie (40-9) was eliminated from its fourth State appearance, and the Raccoons advance to the State semifinals Friday evening.
