Q: May a student get a sponsor for his or her performance during a competition, and have the proceeds go to a charity or to the booster club (i.e., ask a local business man to donate to charity or to a booster club $5 per free throw a student makes during a game or for each touchdown made during a game)?
A: No. Use of a student's performance in a competition to generate funding for the sport or for a charity is prohibited. A student (or a coach, athletic booster club, etc.) may not use a student's performance in any competition to raise funds for any purpose (amateur status). In addition, these events are not allowed during competition by Board of Control action since they may encourage running up the score against an opponent (sportsmanship and gambling).
The Board of Control has made it clear that fundraisers connected to performance in competition are not allowed. Both from the sportsmanship perspective, as well as from the 'paid to perform' and or gaming/gambling end of things, it is a bad idea and not allowed. Any promotion which is based upon performance within competition is not allowed.
