Q: I am writing to confirm that we MUST wear football pants in our scrimmage tomorrow.
A: During the scrimmage, all players MUST wear proper football equipment including football pants.
Q: What is the WIAA policy on skull caps, bandanas, etc. worn under the helmet? How about those thingees that go over the helmet that are purported to prevent concussions?
A: Nothing may be worn between the head and helmet. No medical notes can set aside the rule. These items alter the fit of the helmet and may increase the chance of a helmet coming off the head. Studies have proven that helmets and head coverings do not prevent concussions.
Heat Information
As we prepare for the football scrimmages around the state this weekend, be sure to keep the heat and weather in mind. Temperatures are expected to be in the 80's and 90's this weekend. Frequent water breaks for the upcoming scrimmages (and practices) should be made available and equipment removal/shade is recommended. http://www.wiaawi.org/Portals/0/PDF/Health/Heat%20Management%20Model.pdf
Scrimmages are still to follow the acclimatization schedule with a three hour limit in full pads and a half-hour recovery break before two hours is mandatory. http://www.wiaawi.org/Portals/0/PDF/Health/WIAA-ACCLIMATIZATION.pdf
All athletic programs should have a Heat Acclimatization Program. Among the fundamentals of a Heat Acclimatization Program are 1) a slow progression in activity level – duration and intensity; 2) adjusting workouts as heat and humidity increase, including close monitoring and a prompt response to developing problems; and 3) proper hydration. http://www.wiaawi.org/Portals/0/PDF/Sports/Football/Tips-safertwoAdays.pdf
In addition, be sure to have an emergency action plan in place. Coaches and teams should practice the plan in order to be ready. http://www.wiaawi.org/Health/EmergencyActionPlan.aspx A water tub should be available with a plan to retrieve ice for cooling in an emergency. http://www.wiaawi.org/Health/SuddenCardiacArrest.aspx
The health and safety of all involved is most important. Have a great fall season.
