State Girls Soccer Tournament Preview

 

THE TOURNAMENT:  The 36th Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association Girls Soccer Tournament will take place Thursday-Saturday, June 14-16, at KOHLER Engines Stadium at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee, Wis. Ticket prices are $8 per session and $1 for children 6-years old or younger. Tickets are available at the venue. 
 
TOURNAMENT INFORMATION: The single-elimination tournament features four teams in each of the four divisions. Below are the seeds, pairings and time schedule of games. 
 
Division 2

SEMIFINAL GAMES STREAMED LIVE:  The semifinals of all four divisions of the WIAA State Girls Soccer Tournament will be streamed live on the WIAA.TV portal of the NFHS Network on a consumer subscription basis. To purchase a subscription to the live programming, log-on to www.wiaa.tv or www.nfhsnetwork.com and click on the subscription image in the middle of the page.
 
FINALS AIRED LIVE ON FS WISCONSIN:  Watch the WIAA State Girls Soccer Tournament finals of all four divisions live on FS Wisconsin or FS Wisconsin Plus. The Division 2 championship final will be aired at 11 a.m. on FS Wisconsin, and the Divisions 1 and 4 title games will be aired on FS Wisconsin Plus at 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively. The Division 3 final will air on FS Wisconsin or start on FS Wisconsin Plus if Brewers programming runs long. FS Wisconsin will then join the game in progress after Brewers post-game. Check local cable listings for the channel in your area. The tournament finals will also be streamed live on the FoxSportGo app. Authenticate with your provider’s username and password to access the streams
 
LAST YEAR:  Brookfield Central gained possession  of the Division 1 gold trophy by blanking Bay Port 3-0 in the championship final. Whitefish Bay won the Division 2 crown with a 5-1 victory over Wauwatosa East in the championship game. In Division 3, Catholic Memorial won its sixth straight title, blanking Winneconne 3-0 in the championship final, and Brookfield Academy was the champion in Division 4 following a 1-0 win over Lake Country Lutheran/University Lake in the title game. 
 
DIVISION 1 NOTES:  Sheboygan North is awarded the #1 seed in their first-ever appearance in the State tournament. The Golden Raiders’ road to the State semifinals came through the Germantown Sectional with a 2-1 overtime victory over Arrowhead in the final. They are the champions of the Fox River Classic Conference this season. The  Last year’ runner-up Bay Port is the #2 seed. The Pirates are making their fourth State appearance. Their other previous appearances resulted in losses in the semifinals in 2008 and the quarterfinals in 2010. They finished runner-up in the Fox River Classic Conference behind top-seeded Sheboygan North this spring. They remain in contention for their first State title with a 4-2 victory over Eau Claire Memorial in the Wausau West Sectional final. Kettle Moraine’s previous two experiences in the State tournament came in back-to-back appearances in 2014 and 2015. The most recent of those appearances resulted in a runner-up finish. The Lasers finished third in the Classic Eight Conference this season, which was won by Division 3 qualifier Catholic Memorial. Their return to the State semifinals is result of a 1-0 overtime win over Janesville Craig in the sectional final played at Kettle Moraine. Fourth-seeded Muskego has qualified for the fifth year in a row, which also accounts for the Warriors’ overall total. They are attempting to advance beyond the semifinal round of the State tournament for the first time. The Warriors blanked Kenosha Tremper/Kenosha Reuther 3-0 in the West Allis Hale Sectional final to advance to the State semifinals. They finished fourth in the Classic Eight Conference this season. 
 
DIVISION 2 NOTES:  Last year’s Division 1 champion Brookfield Central drops down a division to pursue back-to-back titles. The Lancers are the top seed in the bracket. They will participate in the State tournament for 14th time overall. They had an impressive run of appearances from 2001-06, winning four straight Division 1 titles from 2002-05. In addition to the championships, they were the runners-up in 1992. The Lancers are the representatives out of the Wauwatosa East Sectional following a 2-1 win over last year’s Division 2 State champion Whitefish Bay in the final. The Lancers are the champions of the Greater Metro Conference this spring.  Second-seeded New Berlin Eisenhower will makes its first State appearance since 2000 and its fifth overall. The Lions’ most notable experience in the tournament was a runner finish in 1999. They are the champions of the West Division of the Woodland Conference this spring. Their return to the tournament field after 18 years comes following a 3-1 win over Waukesha West in the Wauwatosa East Sectional final. Oregon, the third seed, will make its fourth consecutive appearance in the State Tournament, which also accounts for the Panthers’ overall total. Two of the their previous experiences ended in the championship game with a title in 2015 and a runner-up finish in 2016. Their return to the tournament comes following a 1-0 overtime victory over Waunakee in the sectional final held at Oregon. They shared the league championship in the South Division of the Badger Conference with Edgewood this season.  Fourth-seeded River Falls returns to the tournament for the first time since its only other appearance in 2011, which resulted in a loss in the semifinals. The Wildcats are the champions of the Marshfield Sectional with their 2-0 shutout over Pulaski in the final.  They were runners-up to Eau Claire Memorial in the Big Rivers Conference this season.
 
DIVISION 3 NOTES:  Top-seeded Catholic Memorial has won six straight championships, two in Division 2  (2012 & 2013) and the past four seasons in Division 3 (2014-17). The Crusaders make their 13th straight appearance in the State Tournament and their 14th overall. Their impressive streak of success includes a membership-leading 10 championships and two runner-up finishes over the span of the last 14 years, having won championships in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and again last year. Prior to joining the WIAA, Catholic Memorial won three WISAA titles and finished runner-up once. The Crusaders edged Grafton 1-0 in the sectional final played in Waukesha to remain in contention for a seventh straight championship. They are the champions of the Classic Eight Conference this season. Second-seeded Notre Dame qualifies for the 11th time and for the third time in the past four seasons. The Tritons have been State runners-up four times and are still in pursuit of their first title. They fell in the Division 2 finals in 2002, 2003 and 2011, and in Division 3 in 2015. They are the champions of the Winneconne Sectional with a 2-1 win over Plymouth in the final. The Tritons placed third in the standings of the Fox River Classic Conference this spring behind Division 1 State qualifiers Sheboygan North and Bay Port. Belleville/New Glarus, the third seed, is making its third appearance in the State tournament and its second in the past three seasons. The Sugar River Raiders were runners-up in 2016 and fell in the semifinals in their only other previous experience in 2004. Last weekend, they defeated Edgewood 1-0 in the Mount Horeb Sectional final to return to the qualifying field. They are the champions of the South Division of the Capitol Conference this season. Rice Lake has qualified to appear in the State tournament for the second season in a row after making the program’s first-ever appearance last season, which resulted in a loss in the semifinals. They return to the tournament field as the fourth seed following a 2-1 win over Rhinelander in the Hayward sectional. During the regular season, the Warriors finished sixth in the Big Rivers Conference.
 
DIVISION 4 NOTES:  Cedar Grove-Belgium was bestowed the #1 seed in the bracket. The Rockets will experience the State tournament for the first time in the program’s history. They are celebrating their inaugural appearance following a 1-0 shutout over Oostburg in the New Holstein Sectional final. The Rockets finished runner-up to Oostburg for the Big East Conference title during the regular season. The Regis/McDonell Catholic co-op was issued the second seed. The Ramblers will also be making their first appearance in the tournament following a 2-1 win in their match-up with Aquinas in the final of the Assumption Sectional. They played an independent schedule this season. Third-seeded Kenosha St. Joseph is another program making its first State tournament appearance. The Lancers beat Racine St. Catherine’s 3-2 in the sectional final hosted by The Prairie School to make their initial appearance in the tournament. They placed second in the Metro Classic Conference behind Racine St. Catherine’s during the regular season. Another program making its first appearance at State is the Wisconsin Heights/ Barneveld co-op. The fourth-seeded Vanguards finished third in the South Division of the Capitol Conference this year, which was won by Division 3 qualifier Belleville/New Glarus. They have advanced through the Lomira Sectional following their 1-0 triumph over last year’s State runner-up Lake Country Lutheran/University Lake in the final.
